Yeah I'm sure it will take a few years to develop some skills to be creative. But learning enough to do some damage, it's encouraging that it would take 1000 hours or less. The problem is going to be finding a developed cohesive training package.

You can be surprised that it is possible that learning mql4 is faster than learning how to trade for some people, I have heard that some people can take many years to become profitable in trading, but learning mql4 is definitely not going to take many years, and perhaps cheaper also, considering that you won't lose money to the market and the only money you "lose" is perhaps buying resources like books or course etc.

question is when you create them do you understand "HOW" they work, and would you invest you capital in something that you don't???

I'm a person that will educate myself about matter.
I think of myself as "Average Joe" and I need 6 month with 4 hours a day.

"it is not easy, never it was". superficial approach is road to disaster.

I don't know enough about it to imagine what you mean but I assume I would know how something works if I create it without compile errors.

100 to 150 will be more than enough to make you feel comfortable. Even if you hadn't a programming background. From there, you can start creating any indicator and EA. You will have to create many different indicators and EAs to finally feel like you are proficient in the language. But if you just create these programs for yourself, they will probably be pretty similar and in a matter of weeks you'll feel that you can accomplish anything you need for your trading tasks.

MQL4 and MQL5 are similar to C++, but they are also easier.

This video explains the OnCalculate vs the old way of using start() very well. You may wish to take a look. Since you already have some background in programming, the only confusing part about writing indicators is probably the OnCalculate function, once you understand this, should be able to write something simple for your own, with reference to other examples code you can get hold of.

Not easy, mql4 and mql5 are quite different especially for trade operations codes, and it can be quite time consuming to convert, at times I wouldn't use the word "convert", but rather a complete rewrite from scratch. Best to hire someone to do it for you.
