MaxSpread is self-explanatory. You can't disable it, not with good results.

The others are explained numerous times in this thread, once again just recently.

There are lots of parameters you probably shouldn't touch often.

Try my optimization start file and go from there, making small changes at first.

Hi,

I've be trying out the "Maximize Profit" feature, the "ProfitSet " set to 70 and "MoveTP to 30. But for some reason when the trade hits the 70% it doesn't move the TP but closes the trade.

using Blessing version 16 mt4

Can some explain how this feature works and how to set it correctly.

Don't do that.

Grab the optimize start set file I posted and start there. Blessing is a system. It all works together.

You don't set the values checked in my set file to specific values. You let Strategy Tester find the best ones.

Set the lot size and a few surrounding parameters that I haven't checked in the set file to whatever you want.

Optimize.

It's too easy.

I don't know everything about Blessing. But I can get you started optimizing well in a hurry, if you pay attention.

That set file has parameter ranges already set and the important optimizable ones already checked.

They are in groups, as you can see in the Blessing menu.

ATRTF, ATRPeriods, GAF

(Stop optimizing ATRTF after the first pass.)


ProfitSet, MoveTP, TotalMoves

EEHoursPC, EEStartLevel, EELevelPC

(You could leave these alone until the last pass. Whatever ...)


MACDEntry, FastPeriod, SlowPeriod, SignalPeriod

(Stop optimizing MACDEntry after the first pass. You could include MACD_TF in the first pass if you like. I don't usually do that anymore.)


RSI_TF, RSI_Period, RSI_MA_Period

(These are not checked in my set file. Add them if you're grid size is greater than one. Stop RSI_TF after first pass. That may actually be too many parameters at once for Strategy Tester to cope with. Deal with it.)


The set file has MaxTrades set to 1. Try that first. Learn how things work. Don't change too many things at once.

One pass with this set file will get you started, genetic optimization enabled. Then turn genetic off and optimize each group separately. Repeat until nothing changes. The first pass is usually good enough to use live, sometimes perfect.

Repeating this stuff because some folks are too lazy to read back a ways in the list is tiresome.

The new realization here is that MACD is all you usually need. I've been optimizing across all the entry indicators for years and I've noticed that MACD is almost always selected by Strategy Tester. And when I start with just MACD selected things go faster and results are usually better.

So now you know tricks from years of testing. Go forth and conquer!

Try your strategy and learn how everything works with EA. It will take time but understand it thoroughly. Keep on testing your strategies until you get the right results.

Hi Richard, must be RSI_TF always set on 4H even if we change TF on the chart ?
You have set on 4H instead of "current"

Moreover, when i try to optimize with your file GBPUSD and GBPNZD, i have 0 results.

What should i check ?

The biggest impediment to optimization is time. The genetic optimizer is much faster but skips over many possibilities. Without the genetic option it's all brute force and slow. Optimizing just three parameters at a time can take a few minutes, or much more if you're using lots of history or smaller timeframes. Adding just one more parameter makes things take hours. The best thing would be to optimize all the parameters at once without the genetic option, but that would take forever. Unless you're using mt5 and don't mind paying for extra computing power. I tried it. It was fun. And way too expensive.

Try sticking to two or three months of history unless there's good reason to use more. The most recent week and month are most likely to match the future you'll be trading. The further back you go the more different things usually get. More trades is better, but I've had good results with as few as 30 trades, assuming the equity curve and other numbers are good. More trades is better.

A few things to look for:

  1. Getting Average consecutive losses nice and low, 1 or 0 is good, 2 if other things look great. As long as Average consecutive wins is substantially better.
  2. Average profit trade should be larger than Average loss trade, preferably a lot larger.
  3. A reasonable Maximal drawdown, you decide what suits your style and account. Always nice to get a low number.

Be aware that this approach with much increased speed has really changed the game over original Blessing. All kinds of tutorials suggest ways to speed up testing. Most amount to doing less testing, which is problematic, but was necessary back then. Yet they were also doing more testing considering the large histories they used, which was very slow.

Using more history, as I've said, has problems. Especially when the last few months have seen a very different market than just six months or a year ago. Optimizing for a market that's long gone isn't very helpful. Blessing can still find patterns but they usually amount to small undercurrents and low profits.

I don't always understand what Strategy Tester comes up with. But it's smarter than I am, so I go with it.

You can set any parameter you like and optimize around it. That works well in many cases. Good to test things though.

The Blessing source code says RSI_TF should be lower than chart TF. I find that Strategy Tester often disagrees.

Sounds like you have something set wrong. Or there's an error somewhere. Set MaxSpread to 30. Check the Journal for errors. Check out some tutorials on optimization, Youtube, etc. Maybe you have no history. Try unchecking Use date to use whatever history you have instead of the dates you specify.

Not working at all is usually an indication you need tutorial help. Or you need to re-read this thread.

Always check the Journal when you can't figure out what's wrong. If nothing works try reloading mt4 from scratch. It's a known-buggy monster. :-/ You would think Microsoft wrote it. :-)

Hey sorry unrelated note: What do you do when a trend kicks in (and starts causing drawdown) - to hedge or not to hedge (and simply cut the loss at X %?)

I tried the hedging but the price whipped in and out of hedge threshold causing quite big losses (also spread loss each time entering and exiting). Mind you not sure
I was doing the hedge settings too well, might have missed something.

So now thinking perhaps instead of hedging just cut the loss short (equity protection) at 10 or 20% and take the loss on the chin (try and make it back with the smaller but more frequent profits).

Any thoughts?

There are all different approaches. I started out trading stocks some years back. Tight stops seemed like the better choice. Forex is different. Some trade Forex without stops. Ignoring pandemics and other such difficulties, pairs tend to trade in ranges. Good ones in large ranges. I've tried good systems what would occasionally get stuck waiting for drawdowns to come back. Maybe once a year you'd have to wait things out for a few weeks or even a month or two.

So many reasons to divide your account and trade multiple pairs, so when one starts doing poorly you can rely on the others to take up the slack. I don't know about hedging. Opportunities to use it seem rare to me. But maybe its the better tool. I've never figured out how to use it. Like many things, it looks good on yesterday's chart.

I've attempted to backtest hedging and it always seemed to mess up good trading systems too easily.

As you suggest, I do occasionally end up manually taking a loss after things take too long coming back.

Time is a very important facet of trading. Some systems don't seem to pay enough attention to it. Blessing has the Early Exit feature which helps quite a bit. I sometimes wish there was more functionality there.

Thanks for your post a few days ago. You covered so many things it was hard to cover them all. The serve even refuses to quote it for a response. :-)

Consider covering one thing at a time in the future.

1. The source code is the best source of information on Blessing internals. I've considered adding a different trend indicator to let Strategy Tester choose between them. I think that's a good idea.

2. There is trend code in several places in Blessing. When the mt5 conversion is complete it should be (almost) exactly the same.

3. The mt5 version isn't ready yet. Soon, hopefully.

4. Your results suggest a lack of optimization, unless that was a forward test. My optimize-start set file is not meant to be forward tested. As the name suggests it is for starting an optimization -- for the first pass.

Take a look at the Early Exit feature for closing trades early. Or let Strategy Tester do it for you.

For MT4, it will definately provide more acculrate data modeling if it is possible to override the spread setting on strategy tester UI by code. I mean by replacing a dynamic spread every certain period instead of a fixed value. Serveral days of data can be collected via a TF 5m chart(depends on minimun period we gonna trade), then we can normailzie/average them to just 24 hours. start from 00:00 to 23:59. They are broker exclusively of course. Belssing should be able to read these data when making backward optimization. I know that's not as perfect as the solution in MT5. But it's a significant improvement compare to what MT4 is working on...:-)

Guys any idea on why does the EA open trades against the trend ? Of course the trades now are in loss.

I think if we share some ideas we could rework this behavior.
