Market Cycles
There are many theories that describe market cycle analysis, however the most popular one used by professional traders for more than100 years is Dow Theory. Any trader that aims to become consistently profitable with his trading, should never ignore market cycles, in fact understanding the Dow Theory makes it easier and clear to understand how markets move, and why they trend. Definitions of a Trend:
A trend distinguishes the overall direction of the market, via trend analysis you will note the market tends to move in a general direction, or trend, although the market has a general direction, it doesn't mean that it will trend or do so in a straight line. The market will rally up to a high then sell off to a low but overall the market moves in one direction.
Uptrend - An uptrend is when each high in the rally breaks the preceding high level printed by the previous rally's peak, and each low level in the rally must be higher than the preceding rally's low.

Dow Theory is a three-trend analysis:
1.Primary (Primary trend is the largest trend lasting for more than a year).
2 Secondary (Secondary trend is an intermediate trend that lasts three weeks to three months and is often associated with a movement against the primary trend)
3 Minor (Minor trend often lasts less than three weeks and is associated with the movements in the direction of the major trend within the intermediate trend.
Primary Trend
The primary trend is the major trend. It is the most important one because the primary is the overriding trend that affects the movements in inter-market rates. The primary trend will also impact the secondary and minor trends within the market. In Dow Theory, a primary trend is the main direction in which the market is moving in the longer term.
Primary trend will generally last between 1 to three years, sometimes up to 10 years, but regardless of trend length/duration, the primary trend remains in effect until there is a confirmed reversal.

As you can see the primary trend is the direction bias since 2016 and at the primary line the market continues to make higher-lows as described within the chart.
Secondary Trend
The secondary trend will always move in the opposite direction of the primary trend, acting as a correction to the primary trend.
The secondary trend converges in the direction of the primary trend, in this case the primary trend will act as a major support area, remaining intact as price reacts and stays above the underlying trend line. Secondary trends tend to be corrections of the primary trend to a mean (mid-point) reversion to primary move.
The chart below spotlights the primary trend and the secondary trend. The primary is appreciating since 2016 and the secondary is within it downward trend. This would be considered as a market correction within the primary trend. The secondary trend will remain as a secondary trend as long as the primary trend remains the predominant trend.
illustration of a secondary trend within a primary uptrend, traders would perceive/understand that if the price remains above the primary trend line, it is a confirmation that the primary trend remains intact and therefore remains the general direction. The secondary trend would be expected to bounce at the primary Trend line, because it will act as major support area. In general, this secondary trend can last from days to months and are generally more volatile than the primary trend.
Minor Trend
The Minor trend is defined as a market movement lasting no more than three weeks. The minor trend will represent the correction move within the secondary moves, in other words, the moves that go against the direction of the secondary trend.
In the chart below reflects a Minor Trend representation, a minor trend is often volatile and short term:
Note how the minor trend moves upward (in the same direction of the primary), and the secondary trend moves downward (opposite direction of the primary). The short-term nature of the minor trend represents a small part within the primary and secondary trend moves.
Most traders focus their attention on the primary and secondary trends, because minor trends often contain a high amount of volatility and noise, most of the times for the inexperienced trader the short-term volatility of the minor trends can lead to a trader losing sight on the long-term picture.
