well, what i mean is a bigger historical process that is going on for over a 100 years. what you are hinting at (if i understand correctly) is only one of the most recent moves in this long, slow decline. it was forseen already in the 19th century by thinkers so diverse as Nietzsche on the one hand, J. S. Mill on the other. they saw very clearly, what will become of our societies.
and i did not want to say, the higher realms should be reserved for only the few. rather, i would say, that only few ever reach them, because the price to pay is high. but the few are beacons for us all. so the aspiration and ideals you speak of were good, but what turned out in the end, combined with many other factors, was the next step in the decline. not forseeable. but it's a huge dialectic, and as it is said: road to hell is paved with good intentions..
the result of the "everything for everyone for free"-ideology of our times is the absolute entitlement-mentality. fewer and fewer people (it seems) are willing to work hard and commit themselves to one single goal. meaning: they don't even understand that great things come from hard work and commitment only. instant gratification is the slogan of our time.

Yesterday the Ascending Wedge was triggered but... remember that each pattern can be defeated.
