Going Crazy

At first I developed an EA that works very well (the success rate is about 65% to 70% for at least 5 pairs). I backtested the system and then forward tested it on a demo account. It looked very good and promising.

I eventually started live trading on October 16. I trade 5 pairs and risk 1% of my account on each pair (VAR=1%). Within two weeks my account shows a growth of over 6%.

Now, I want to go crazy and increase Value At Risk of each trade to 3% or even more. Is it a wise decision?

I really need your advice.

If I would follow strictly the system I elaborated with some other traders I would be milionair now

They follow it very strictly and are making lots of money, especially because they invest also more then me.

what is your winrate and payrate? and you have 100 forward tests to base this on?

65% win rate is kind of risky.. Your winnings needs to be at least as big as your losses + spread to be even. Also need to know what your biggest possible drawdown.... All to be place into considaration... If you don't have more confidence and are nervous about your EA then it's because you know it's too risky. I suggest either you do backtest the same period/pairs you did in your recent trades just to see if it's consistent. If not, i suggest you study FF harder to find a better entry/exit methodology. Be open minded, don't get stock over one method there is a lot of method posted here, most are valid, some are better. I'm sure you can achieve 75% big win and 25% small loss. Keep working your method man, you'll be happy once you acheived it.

6% in a few weeks is pretty darn good. Ignorance, greed, fear and hope are the worst enimies of a speculator. Jumping to 3% risk on a "promising" system at such an early stage strikes me as having elements of all 4.

Ignorance - in that u really don't yet know how it will act in all markets.
Greed - Not being satisfied w/ steady but slow growth
Fear - The system might stop working so i better get all I can now.
Hope - that the system keeps working.
If u must increase - increase to 1.5% and continue your evaluation.

Your result sounds very good. How long have you been back testing of your EA. To my experience, some EA are having difficulties when price in consolidation/narrow range while they are good when market are in trending mood. I think it is wise to back test at least for 6 months or a year. IMHO though. All the best.

A suggestion or two, if you like. .

Is there ever a situation where the probabilty of success goes up with the method you have the EA based on?

Maybe you can modify the code to trade more lots under higher probability situations. There maybe a filter you can add to help with this.

Another idea is to increase the lots if you , say, have 5 successful trades in a row or something. i.e. The EA wins 5 times and you have gained a good bank of pips, the EA then increase the lots by a step for the next trade (or for the next higher probability trade) until there is 1 loser or something.

Of course, any changes like this would have to be re-backtested, but if you manually changed the parameters your self when you noticed a good series of gains for a few trades you could babysit it and re-set it back as the market changes.

Yes I did forward test it for more than 100 trades. I also backtested the EA over several time frames (3 months, 6 months, and two years) from mid June 2004 to the present time. I used minute data to make sure about the accuracy.

The backtest shows roughly 65-70% winrate and the average profit per trade is roughly 70-75% of the average loss per trade. The profit factor varies from 1.2 to 1.6.

The results of the live trade are much better. I used a trick. I trade 5 different currencies at the same time to avoid great losses or great wins. This will help me to have a better growth. You can find the results on my trading journal.

Thanks very much. I think you are right. I'll review my system once more to see whether it is appropriate to increase the risk or it's just because of those elements that I'm thinking of increasing my risk.

I've backtested the system for different time periods including 3 months, 6 months, 2 years, and almost 2 and a half years. I used a modeling quality of 90%. I've also forward tested the system for 3 weeks on a demo account and I've already started live trading for two weeks.

It's a real good advice. I'm still working on this idea. I spent the last to figure out how I can improve the behaviour of the system under different market conditions. I tried to use ATR. It showed some positive impact for a long period of time but had no effect on the behaviour of the system at short periods (6 months and under). I'll definitly take this very serious.

i was confused on your payrate is it 70% of average win, so if average win is $0.70 average loos is $1.00?

if thats true you have

65% winrate
0.70 payrate

gives you a expectancy ratio of 1.3

so you can trade 3% a trade with less then 1% chance of risk of ruin
if you go above 3 you are starting to take risks.

other intesting facts. if your winrate and payrate holds true:
after 1000 trades at 3% and never break your rules, you have:

0% risk of ruin
0.50% chance of losing money
99.50% chance to make money
95.40% chance to double your money
83.10% chance to 4x your money
57.10% chance to 8x your money

if you want to go crazy, crazy you can go to 5%

1% risk of ruin
2% chance of losing money
98% chance to make money
96% chance to double your money
89% chance to 4x your money
79% chance to 8x your money
62% chance to 16x your money

course i would never bet more then a 0.005% risk of ruin , it has a way of beating the math


also, i dont count on accuracy with backtesting on mt4, it has some major flaws, its good so see if you system is viable but it can be off by alot. imagine it was off by 5%, your effecientcy ratio would only be 1.05 only letting you bet 0.5% of your account a trade and with mm you would actually loose money 50% of the time (mm makes it easier to lose money then get money). get your 100 forward tests as a base line and update it with each trade you take afterwards. keep yourself in the loop

You are right my payrate is roughly 70% (0.7 win to 1 loose). These calculations are amazing. Is there a source that I can learn how to do these.

I take your advice serious. I definitely won't increase the VAR to 5%. I had a day that I lost 3 trades in a row. If I had risked 5% per trade that could mean loosing 15% of my account in a single day. I can't take it psychologicly. I'll probably stick with 1% risk or at most increase it to 3%.

I backtested my EA once more for the period of June 15, 2004 to present with VAR=3% (Value At Risk per trade). Here are the results. I also included EURCHF which I do not trade right now. What do you think? Does it worth it to increase the VAR from 1% to 3%?

BTW, in backtest the starting account size is $10,000.00.
