I never use stop loses. Never. I learned a long time ago that as long as i use stops i lose money. When trading without stop loses make sure you trade with the trend and not against it.

I learned a long time ago not to use stop loses. however, you must have a stong trend and trade with the trend not against it. I do everything i am not suppose to do and win 99% of the time. One i had 7 trades open when the market closed on Fri. when the market opened each one was $500 to $700 in the red. but Tuesday they turned around and i added $3406.43 to my account. I use only take profits. usually 50 to 100 pips. I make my trades set my take profits go about my business and check on them in a few hours. been working this way for years.

Yes you should always use stop loss. I am not going to argue with anyone who says they do not. It is a question of style. If you feel comfortable and are successful without stop loss, great. Try this JsnSolomon. Since you are new, look at using a stop loss as a safety mechanism. As you get better, if you feel you do not need to use stops, then do not.

I never made any money until i quit using stop losses. I read an article about stop loses and this guy said that he never used stop loses. I decided to try it and since i have stopped using stop loses i have made money. If you are not going to use stop loses make sure you know the direction the market is going. Never trade against the trend. I never made a trade until i check the Day chart , 1 hour chart and the 5 min charts and make sure they are pointing in the same direction. Yes i have had trades go as far as $7000 in the red and come back and make me a nice profit. let say the trend on the day chart is going down , and the trend on the hour chart shows it is going down, now check the 5 minute chart and if it is going down make a trade but be sure it is a sell. It may hick up and go into the red but if the trend is still going down it will come back down and make you a profit. it can be nerve wracking at times but have patience.

This market can make you confuse more and more if you don’t know how to manage or use stop loss , there is no way to ignore the importance of this trading technique, just make sure how to use this approach in a proper way. good luck

Well, yes you can, but only until that one trade that takes you out of the game.

Even if you had infinitely deep pockets, why would you stand idly by and just watch your money drain away? You're either right or you're wrong on a position. A sensible stop preserves capital and you get to fight another day.

The only traders who doesn't need stops are those who get the direction, momentum and timing precisely right - every single trade. I've never met one.

Sometimes market become crazy without any indication; that’s the main disadvantage of trading without SL. Even, requotes is one of the most common problem on this type of crazy session.

Hi joldas,

I would never use stop losses. These stop losses can be viewed by MarketMakers. They are always on hunt for stop losses. Instead what I would do is use hedging.

How?

Lets say you are short 10000 units at price 1 (for the sake of example).
You think the price will go to 0.80.

You create a hedge to go long at 10000 if the price increases to 1.05.

By that way you are not stopped out of your trade and if the price goes higher you are protected by your hedge.

That does sound like one useful way to avoid using stop loss. I hadn't considered it before.

wow ten years later, this thread is still going..

I'm further testing this 'no stop loss' idea. Here are the points i've found most relevant to my backtest on some pro trader's FX books (all manual entries).

MAE max is 300 pips.
A big loss to their account is 1% of total account.
Though they have no stop loss, there is a mental spot where to get out.
They're wiling to hold trades for 30-110 days (can you mentally do this?)
Average typical duration of 50% of winning trades was 8d
Win rate was around 80% (over 5 years!)
Total draw down was around 45% (using algo, they got it to 20's)
Gains over five years was about 2000%.

Here's the FXbook, hope this helps, and do some thorough research on the topic, because it is possible, but you must really have a good idea of market structure, and still be objective to the matter.

Whether or not to use stop loss is an ever relevant topic, I imagine this thread will be active for as long ForexFactory exists.

I think that applies to most traders, but some actually manage it without the stop loss. I have no idea how they do it.

Making own trading style without the SL will be very dangerous for sure; only one long-tail trend (in the opposite site) is enough to destroy these types of traders account!

It is very dangerous but you can earn money that way with good money management. You need to have big capital, trade with small lots, and be online to do some heading (if is necessary).
