good Strat VEE when I reached 60 there was no penalty that's why I cashed out and your right you have to leave job but after 60 days you get the cash out. You could always go back to job but why should you when trading becomes a living 401k and job

it's insane why there's this rule you have to be certain age to withdraw..

i can understand that if they make you return the money back from company matching..but my own money i can't withdraw anytime.

it's all scam...

and you always hear that you need to invest for the future..put more in 401k

now i think it's all a plot for the elites to steal money from regular folks with these boom and busts...

401k is a tax deferment savings plan with a risk nothing more than that I never added to it my contributions were based on profit sharing the true OPM no risk on my part

I feel the same way as there are better ways to park funds for "retirement" at your age (especially if one can use money to make money more than the tax bracket) but for those who cannot trade and have a 8-5 employment, it's a "polite" way

  1. for the financial industry to thrive on fees/commissions
  2. and for Governments to legitimize the "investment propaganda machine"
  3. and reduce their citizens to rely on social security and social services infrastructure (food stamps etc)

I somewhat feel the same way about taking mortgages towards "home ownership". I had FAR more hard cash savings left every paycheck when I was renting a cheap apartment. The key to wealth creation is to "use money to make money grow" and passive investing has some place for some people (uneducated, estate tax, saving for education, generational gifts etc).

tax deferment for the 95% crowd I would say just to benefit the coffers of employers to entice young workers to become life long slaves by giving x% of employer match. For high-income executives, there are far superior vehicles which allows them to legally park pretty much all of their earning if they choose to :-)
My "effective" tax rate for past 10 yrs is just under 6% so go figure :-)

bottom line is if you can out perform the mutual fund/401k/Roth ira etc by trading shouldn't you be the 401k and you in control against any circumstance

My over-thinking brain would say... "out-performance has to be Risk and Tax-Weighted" especially when leverage is involved :-

Hilmy, some folks will simply reallocate their 401K to put the money into a money market or let it sit idle until this passes, that way they do not lose the gains. There are better options. 401Ks are very expensive and not worth contributing anything more that what the employer will match.

I know a guy who specializes in exactly this type of stuff. I can get you his info if you want someone to help.

Thanks man. I'm using Fidelity through work so I have those options already
I was just curious to how people handle recessions since this is my first one seeing my investments dip since I started saving at work

pretty much follows the market..i put most in growth stocks as well. you can see smooth sailing till last 2-3 months

i think once my trading account exceeds 401k by considerable amount. i'll consider managing on my own. divergence is right.. the question will be, who's better, me or this asshole taking fees with less performance than the market? so we'll see

Open an account @ a stock broker & just invest in ETFs. Learn a bit about options to control risk @ times of uncertainty rather than jumping in & out of your long-term positions.
So many ETFs to chose from & fees are small for most. Avoid ALL leveraged ETFs for long-term investments.
