Thanks. I have been to over 25 countries and they all have good favorable conditions to retire but warm weather, good healthcare infrastructure and under $2.5K/month cost of living is the main criteria for the both of us (in that order). I personally have only one.... either sunrise or sunset or preferably both is the must. I know for sure we will end up splitting across two locations to satisfy both our checklist :-(

I have been to Madrid, Barcelona and Granada.. most of western Europe but Mexico is still in the running... got 3 yrs to explore move options and then settle down :-

But first, working on my new year resolution list between 1/1 and 1/xx (birthday) as always.

We have friends that just moved from Miami to Valencia, they love it. They feel safer and they love the way that they can walk around at night without continually looking over their shoulder.

Like Mexico, but leaves me a little to far from blighty and my mates.

Cost of living here is piss all, but if you need a job, it ain't easy to earn serious money down in this part of the world.

But for me personally, I enjoy the cultural diversity and the rich history here, and the rest of Europe which is easily accessible via a quick flight.

Being retired I often think of spending a couple of winter months in Spain to avoid some of the winter gloom in the UK. Makes sense ? Spend summer in UK and some of the winter in sunny climes. :-)

seeing my 401k going to shit just puts a damper to winning days at trading...

how do you people deal with this crazy bear market. withdraw from 401k? or invest in money market?...

This is how my 401K curve looks for past 12 months.... I am in 100% growth funds with quarterly automatic-rebalance between US and rest of the world :-

That's terrible. the overall rule of thumb for mutual funds is 10% a year you can do better just trading

Agree. it sucks to just see this shit over and over again... 2000, 2003, 2008.... There is just nothing we can do much with timing and allocations when it comes to 401K... it all happens at end of day although my company allows me to open a self-directed brokerage account in my 401K but only for Stocks and ETFs. I might go that route but not too much time on my hands to time the market in individual stocks.

Thinking of trading futures in my two IRA accounts sometime this year.. let's see how it goes :-

if one can trade some what consistently then you create your own 401k and a living at the same time that's why I cashed out when I hit 60 paid the tax and traded for a living

if i cash out i'd be hit with 10% penalty and taxes..

i guess im not sure if paying house is good for me (not that i have enough to pay it off) since my interest is 3.75%, and was able to get around 5-10% return on investments so far. i have about 30 years of working life hopefully

didn't really start saving until 2010 just couple of years out of school. i guess i'm the lucky group who graduated at the start of the great recession and was able to ride up when we finally able to invest.

if i did withdraw id' use that to trade no doubt. it's just that my wife would kill me if she finds out.

hilmy it comes down to this can you outperform your 401k. I believed I could and you might be able also . most on great years make 20% for year trading yields that per month or more

Interesting discussion as I have been sleeping on this option for a while now. You cannot withdraw or close 401K unless you quit your job. No employer that I know of will allow this to happen. You could only take a hardship loan upto 50K max and then trade futures in it. I took a loan in 2008 (before the financial crises) because I anticipated a decent crash and did not want to get burnt (but I did not trade... just parked and then paid it all back in 2009/10).

Now, if and when you quit employement, then there is no need to withdraw and pay penalty either. You simply move 401K into a rollover IRA (roth or traditional) and then move your IRA into a self-directed custodian account and trade futures with leverage exactly the same way as you would with your regular account. There is no difference in trading conditions between IRA and non-IRA accounts which is beautiful imo. Then grow your account to a point where your net gains after penalty and taxes is still over and above the pissy 10-20% annual gains we get from the stock market.... again, trading IS gambling and I would not recommend gambling with your retirement but you are young and profitable so it might work for you (but go with ROTH IRA instead... and you will never pay taxes on your trading gains for the rest of your life... and no penalty after 5 yrs i think).

I am seriously thinking of doing this myself with one of my two IRA accounts but only if my strategy proves merit for 3 (or 6?) consecutive months of profitability. SIM is looking good thus far during the morning NYSE session

EDIT: Regarding the other question... in 2018, I did only minimum contribution to get my 7% employer match and then waited until October to do a lump sum to come up with the allowed annual limit and then increased again in December to do the additional $5K catchup contribution for 50+.... just another way to time the market but in my experience, nothing beats good old passive dollar cost averaging in the long run.
