UK economy faces weakest growth since 2009, employers warn

The British Chambers of Commerce has cut its UK growth forecast for 2018, warning the economy faces its weakest year since the financial crisis. The employers' group forecast 2018 GDP growth of 1.3%, down from a previous forecast of 1.4%, and cut its forecast for 2019 from 1.5% to 1.4%. The BCC said there was a "lacklustre outlook" for consumer spending, business investment and trade. It said the next few years will "be a testing time for business in the UK". Uncertainties around Brexit, interest rate rises, threats of trade wars and rising oil prices were all hurting sentiment, the BCC said. If the forecast for ... (full story)

I have got to agree with Newton on this one - Brexit wasn't the problem, too much governmental controls and policies leading to lack of bank lending and over taxation.

Really it's just the UNCERTAINTY of what occurs after Brexit. Too many people have "chicken little syndrome" The UK was a powerhouse BEFORE the EU and after BREXIT it "should" regain its status.

Of course immigration was a part of the decision making process. I have heard many Brexiters openly stating that. Why not. Immigration control is not racist, that accusation is just trotted out to censor our views. Control of the population in ones country is not racist. The UK is known for it tolerant society. We have welcomed foreigners from all over the world for years. Control of our borders , our sovereignty, self determination, the making of our own laws, are quite legitimate and worthy aims.

No is is not delusion but simply not delivering on the goods. The idea of a tariff free trading zone sound great on paper and it can be, however it was the immigration policy and re-distribution of funds that proved to be too much

When the UK joined in 1973, per capita GDP was 7% smaller than the EU6 average. In 1950 the difference in per capita GDP between the UK and EU6 was 28%. However , whilst Lame Brained , Mono thinking buffoons keep refusing businesses loans and taxes the living crap out of productivity , in favour of ever handouts to non productive retirees sipping G&T's on their ever growing (but never earned) bonaza charity freebees , UK will head Southward into the dirt........ no hope for UK, abandon ship

Last week in the Eastern region it was announced that since the referendum, overseas investment in our region has gone up 48%

No doubt the BCC is bought and paid for by EU funds to spin their usual shite to justify themselves. The only reason growth has been stifled in the past is because of the policies of the remainder club

DonFF, the "problem" with the systems is actually pretty simple. Not everyone is created equal. There are certain "problems" endemic to societies/cultures. Some is generations old and others are a relationship to weather - look at the Siesta. In counties where there is sweltering temperatures and no air conditioning the siesta made economic sense and has become ingrained into their society. In today's modern world with AC the need for a siesta has diminished.

Certain cultures are used to kings/monarchs while others only function under a democracy....There will never be a "one world order" unless something terrible happens. Government is best kept to a local level

Actually investing in EM (emerging markets) can pay handsomly when there is stagnation in other markets. Why invest in the UK for a 1.5% when you can invest in Turkey and get 30% or even the Greek market for 45%? Of course you run the risk that your investment in Turkey or Greece will go to 0%

Nothing to do with Brexit, in fact , the Ponzi scheme has been bought and paid for by the B of E (Remainers to the end) and George Osbourne (Ex Chancellor and Remainer) and current Chancellor Philip Hammond (Staunch remainer accused of attempting to derail Brexit).

We have always had full control of our borders. The UK has never been a part of Schengen zone. Same goes for self determination and law making. As for sovereignty, we have already compromised this by joining United Nations and NATO, decades ago. Are you going to leave NATO as well?

What is really hidden behind them is this: you cannot stand the fact that most migrants from the EU are, on average, better educated, more intelligent and, above all, more committed than an average native slob. Hence the BS talk about 'rights'. Which makes more economic sense? from an efficiency and decision making effectiveness point of view? centralized or decentralized?

What works best in some countries wont in others so the solutions are not very straightforward nor cut and dry.

Self-governance must be the basis of any society and to the extent that self governance is strong and effective then the role of a Central government is significantly reduced.

The trouble with a central government is mans inability to do the job....and this is the real problem.
