Four Important Trading Insights

Here are a few valuable insights I've gathered from my recent work with skilled, successful traders:

1) What you trade is as important as how you trade: The successful traders are trading instruments that move in meaningful ways and that capture their best ideas. That means trading instruments that show the right kind of movement, and it means expressing your ideas through positions that offer the best risk/reward. The successful traders have many ways to capture ideas: many time frames, many instruments (stocks, futures, options), many markets.

2) Balance matters: When trading gets difficult, it's often the traders most passionate about trading--who devote most of their waking hours to trading--that are most vulnerable. It's easiest to see markets clearly when trading fits into your life, not when you are frantically fitting your life into trading. The goal is to have a happy, fulfilling life no matter what markets or P/L are doing.

3) The best trading ideas come to you: So much of trading boils down to real time pattern recognition. You see many things, and you see them line up, and the idea comes to you that the market is making a top or bottom, that the momentum move will continue, etc. Finding the good trade means shutting down the ego, emptying the mind, and becoming receptive to insight. If you are actively *trying* to make money and thinking about how much you're making or losing, you fill your mind with outcome-thinking, which crowds out the process focus.

4) Develop a higher cause: I hear traders fretting over losing trades, getting frustrated and losing discipline and focus because of missed opportunities. Chill. There are people with real problems in the world: their homes flooding, their lives in jeopardy, their futures uncertain--in Houston, in Florida. I've been impressed with traders who are strongly grounded in their religion. Of course they don't like making trading mistakes, but they don't let the most recent trades dictate their moods or perspectives. Perspective is the most powerful psychological tool of all.

When we develop relationships with other dedicated, successful traders, we build role models. We learn from their experience, accelerate our development, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of others. Trading goes best when it is yoked to rewards (intellectual fulfillment and challenge; committed teamwork) that are independent of the most recent trading results.

One could be excused these past few weeks for believing that the people in America have lost their collective minds, as all of the evidence seems to point to that fact being true—and whose absolute absurdities occurring during these past few weeks include:
A statue of the 15th Century French national hero Saint Joan of Arc, in New Orleans, being defaced with the words “Tear it down” spray painted on it.


A statue of the 16th Century Italian national hero Christopher Columbus, in Baltimore, being nearly destroyed with a placard being placed on it reading: “Racism: Tear it down. The future is racial and economic justice.”


A statue of the 18th Century Spanish national hero Saint Junípero Serra, in California, being defaced with the words “Murderer” spray painted on it.
New York City beginning what they call a “symbol of hate” purge targeting a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus and (how to explain this?) the tomb of President Ulysses S. Grant—whose Union armies defeated the slave owning States during America’s 1861-1865 Civil War.


The iconic Lincoln Memorial, in Washington D.C., being defaced with the words “Fuck law” spray painted on it—and is the monument dedicated to the American president who waged the Civil War to free his nation’s slaves.

Over 2,000 American citizens donating over $60,000 to a former CIA deep-cover agent named Valerie Plame-Wilson so that she can buy Twitter for $1 billion and then kick President Donald Trump off of it.


The American cable sports channel ESPN removing one of their Asian-American sports announcers named Robert Lee from covering a sporting event because his name was too close of match to that of General Robert E. Lee—who aside from his leading the Northern Army of Virginia during the Civil War, is considered the world over as one of the greatest military minds of all time—and no one at ESPN bothering to discover that the surname Lee is the most popular one in the world.


The American cable news network CNN now writing an Orwellian headline titled “Activists Seek Peace Through Violence” praising radical leftists—and who in their article titled “These Are The Monuments Vandalized After Charlottesville”, failed to mention the full totality about what’s occurring in America to destroy all of that nations past history.


I could go on, and on, and on, listing these absurdities now occurring America (such as 5-year-old baby children being taught how to change their sex), but what is most important is that YOU, the reader of these words, understand that what’s really occurring is the triumph of a philosophy actually named Absurdism—and whose basic view is that “humanity must live in a world that is and will forever be hostile or indifferent towards them”.


Absurdism is opposed to religious thought (most particularly Western Christianity) in that it gives no peace to its adherents (either in life or death)—forcing them to live in a world where only their immediate needs, desires and wants are important, not their fellow human beings.


Matched with the political ideologies of communism and socialism (supremacy of the collective over the individual), the Absurdism philosophy has been used with great effect to overturn whole nations and societies too—and whose most decisive aspects ignite civil war—and that the masses of the American people still fail to comprehend that they’re in the midst of, right now!



The founder of the Absurdism philosophy, you should know, was the French-Algerian journalist, playwright, novelist, philosophical essayist, and Nobel Prize winner Albert Camus (1913-1960)—who codified the notion of “Revolt” that refers to both a path of resolved action and a state of mind, and that can take extreme forms such as terrorism or a reckless and unrestrained egoism--that basically, and in simple terms, consists of an attitude of “heroic defiance” or “resistance” to whatever oppresses human beings.
As being used in America today, however, the Absurdism philosophy targets “anything and everything” that the “mindless masses” are told is a threat to their existence—and that to most fully comprehend, one must first understand what has happened to the two institutions there who created these “mindless masses”: the university and the news media—who do not regard their mission as educating and informing, but indoctrinating.


These Absurdism indoctrinated “mindless masses” are now being unleashed upon America to ignite a civil war that Russian political commentator Dmitry Kosyrevsays is now ongoing—and who laid out its true goals by stating [English]:
“Democrats are doing wild, suicidal things because they are not just on the defensive, but on the verge of collapse, as the Trump administration is breaking down their ‘evil empire’…and their goal is not the destruction of Russia, but the salvation of their own project.


Democrats do not have a majority in Congress or their own army, but the war they have been waging is a hybrid one—therefore, in the media zone, they are advancing with a wild, schizophrenic rage.


However, they haven’t yet fully monopolized this sphere, and the essence of what is happening is that the Republicans are now advancing against them—it simply happens in dozens of small, internal episodes.

And as one could see, the Democrats have a lot to lose in this war—and it still has no end in sight.”

Agreeing with Kosyrev that a civil war is now ongoing in America is one of that nations elite Green Beret officers (now retired) who warned this past week that “a domestic destabilization is underway”—and was joined in this assessment by historian Gregory R. Copley, President of the International Strategic Studies Association (ISSA), who, likewise, warned this week:
“Urban globalists control most of the means of communications [is this new “means of production”; the 21st Century marxian dialectic?] and therefore control “information” and the perception of events.

“Nationalists”, then, are operating instinctively, and in darkness.

I have covered the US for 50 years, and my earliest view of it was, a half century ago, that its populations would inevitably polarize into protective islands of self-interest, surrounded by seas of unthinking locusts. (i.e. mindless masses)


What is ironic is that the present islands of wealth and power — the cities — have come to represent short-term materialism, as cities have throughout history.

But what is interesting is that, despite the global attention on the political/geographic polarizations occur-ring in the US and other parts of the Western world, there has been a reversion in other parts of the world to a sense of Westphalian or pre-Westphalian nationalism.


The fact that “the West” may have ring-fenced Iran, Russia, and so on, with sanctions and other forms of isolation may well be what ensures their enduring status.

They have avoided the contagion of globalism.

Russia, indeed, recovered from the Soviet form of globalism in 1991.

An urban globalist “victory” over Trump and Brexit would trigger that meltdown toward a form of civil societal collapse — civil war in some form or other — as the regions disavow the diktats of the cities.


That would, in turn, bring about the global economic uncertainty which could impact the PRC (Peoples Republic of China and then the entire world.

But such a conflict — physical or political — could, equally, lead to a victory for nationalism over globalism, and to the protection of currencies and values.
We have seen this cycle repeated for millennia.

The noted popular American social critic Daisy Luther has further warned what this civil war is attempting to do by her writing:
“Balkanization is defined as the “fragmentation or division of a region or state into smaller regions or states that are often hostile or uncooperative with one another.”

Agreeing with Daisy Luther that the Balkanization of America is well underway in this civil war is the noted former Nixon and Reagan administration official and historian Pat Buchannan, who further warns:
“Bottom line for the left: Americans should be sickened and ashamed of the history that made us the world’s greatest nation. And we should acknowledge our ancestors’ guilt by tearing down any and all monuments and statues that memorialize them.


This rising segment of America, full of self-righteous rage (Absurdism philosophy), is determined to blacken the memory of those who have gone before us.


To another slice of America, much of the celebrated social and moral “progress” of recent decades induces a sense of nausea, summarized in the lament, “This isn’t the country we grew up in.”


Hillary Clinton famously described this segment of America as a “basket of deplorables … racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic … bigots,” and altogether “irredeemable.”



So, what still unites us? What holds us together into the indefinite future? What makes us one nation and one people? What do we offer mankind, as nations seem to recoil from what we are becoming, and are instead eager to build their futures on the basis of ethnonationalism and fundamentalist faith?

To who is going to eventually win this new American Civil War (either the “globalists” or “nationalists”) I can’t tell you yet—but if it’s the leftist globalists be warned!


And here’s why—lost in all the media scrum occurring in America today, this past week a US federal jury dealt a “stinging blow” to a US Federal Judge and Prosecutor when they acquitted those involved in the Bundy Ranch dispute—in which the US Federal Judge astonishingly restricted the defendants from raising Constitutional arguments, or mounting any defense based on their First Amendment rights to free speech and their Second Amendment rights to bear arms because the Prosecutors said, and the Judge agreed, that were not applicable arguments in the case.


As to how the US Constitution isn’t applicable to any American’s right to defend themselves against their own government no one bothered to say, and the media didn’t bother to ask—but that didn’t bother in the least the leftist globalist George Soros who is right now, even as I write these words, flooding District Attorney races throughout the United States with tens-of-millions of dollars to elect those who think exactly like this—or in George Orwell’s famous words to let you know what you’ll be facing if these globalists win: “If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.”


And, if you think that the President Bill Clinton, and his wife Hillary Clinton’s, deliberate attack and breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992 was really about “freedom” and “democracy”, let me tell you the truth—it was the “blueprint” for what is now going on in America—and that even one of Russia’s most esteemed diplomats, Igor Panarin, in 2008, warned was coming by his predicting that America would collapse and break up into six parts.


As Gregory R. Copley stated too, and as I’ve mentioned above, its critical that you always remember that the “Urban Globalists” control most of the means of communications and therefore control information and the perception of events”—thus leaving you as a “Nationalist” operating instinctively, and in darkness.



And that’s were we come in, because every single hour of every single day, we shine a light into this “darkness of lies” so that you can see the “light of truth”.


But, with the American Silicon Valley overlords having taken over journalism, Google now revealed to be secretly recording everything you say even when your cell phones are off and then selling it to US spy agencies (“Oh, that’s Google, they are always here begging us to buy their data.”), PayPal banning anyone when ordered to do so by George Soros funded leftist groups, and YouTube now censoring everyone not agreeing with the leftist-globalist agenda too—it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that unless the “Nationalists” begin supporting those trying to help them, they’ll, most certainly, lose this civil war.


So, today, right NOW in fact—I’m pleading with each and everyone of YOU to immediately awaken and realize that you’re in a very deadly civil war for the very survival of your nation and way of life—and whose first duty (as it’s been throughout history) is support those of us fighting on the front lines of this conflict.


Remember too, if our “front line of truth” fails because we’re not supported by those who are supposed to defend us (that’s YOU), this war will end up on your very doorstep—and whose consequences, remember, are nothing less than “a boot stamping on your face—forever”.

Notes From Underground: The More Things Stay the Same, the More the Headlines Change

The BOE held true to consensus and kept rates unchanged and maintained its balance sheet at 435 billion pounds, with the votes were exactly the same as the August meeting. The POUND fell on the initial headlines but the algos reversed as it was reported that there MAY be a need to raise rates due to the lessening slack in the economy. Governor Carney is reading from the Mario Draghi book, “Rules For Central Bankers.” He cited Brexit as the cause of a supply shortage because of reduced investment into the U.K. Wow! This is nonsense as stagnant wages are limiting domestic demand but Carney insists the negative fallout is constraining supply. With interest rates at record lows British firms could borrow all the cash they need to finance expansion. Carney needs BREXIT as the cover for his massive error. Remember when he panicked and cut rates following the BREXIT vote?

In following the poor forecasting record of central banks, Carney’s economic downturn never came. In fact, the severely weakened POUND helped British exporters and the U.K. economy remains at full-employment. Rest assured Governor Carney will reach into his bag of tricks and pull out the counterfactual, “had we done nothing the U.K. economy would have gone into a steep decline.” So the end result was that the British pound rallied 1.5% in anticipation of the coming rate increase. The level of resistance I posted last night should correlate with the 200-day moving average on the euro/pound cross, which Thursday was 0.8701, and is currently trading at 0.8893. The euro/pound cross is DOWN 4.5% on the week. The madness of crowds, indeed.

***The Swiss National Bank also announced its interest rate intentions Thursday. I didn’t mention it last night because I deemed it irrelevant. As usual, the SNB failed to surprise as they stayed the course of expansionary monetary policy: Deposit rates stuck at -0.75%. The statement said: “The SNB will remain active in the foreign exchange market as necessary, while taking the overall currency situation into consideration.” The U.S. Treasury has yet to designate the SNB a currency manipulator, which provides cover for many other central banks to set their monetary policy based on their currency values. Further, the SNB is so brazen as it said:
“Since the last monetary policy assessment, the Swiss Franc has weakened against the EURO and APPRECIATED against the dollar.

No currency manipulation going on here. I will say it loud and clear: I AM NOT A GOLD BUG BUT I AM CERTAINLY NOT A FIAT CURRENCY BUG. The global financial system is fraught with central banks bent on the destruction of market signals and they HAVE NO EXIT FROM THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF LIQUIDITY THEY HAVE CREATED. The FED will have to begin quantitative tightening (QT) in order to test the “PAINT DRY” theory of extrication. The SNB has always maintained their intervention was based on the EUR/CHF cross, but it is of more than passing interest in referencing the DOLLAR in Thursday’s release of its Monetary Policy Assessment. The EURO currency has GAINED 6% versus the Swiss year-to-date, and for the SNB it is not enough to affect its negative rate policy. Nah … 2+2=4. Maybe in some alternative universe.

On this day in 1949 Yale University Press published Ludwig von Mises’s economic treatise, Human Action. Later in 1949 another book appeared, George Orwell’s 1984.

Almost everyone has at least heard of Orwell and 1984. The same is unfortunately not true of Mises and Human Action.

Both books are attached to their authors as if they were extended surnames. Orwell is 1984, Mises is Human Action.

Among the many who’ve read it, 1984 is regarded as a premonition of what could happen if the proclivities of the state are not checked.

Among those who have studied it, Human Action is understood as what would happen if the proclivities of the state are checked.

It’s the difference between a slave and a free man, war and peace, poverty and prosperity, misery and the potential for happiness.

A person cannot breathe in Orwell’s fictional world. Aside from a tiny ruling elite, members of the society live impoverished lives with no hope of anything better. They are ciphers, expected to obey and spied upon constantly to ensure that they do. Society’s history and language are whitewashed in conformity with the state’s mission of total control. War and hate are directed to serve state interests.

State informers are everywhere. At the end Orwell’s hero, Winston Smith, himself betrayed by confederates, betrays his love for a woman for a sheep’s existence under Big Brother’s watch. Winston Smith, the individual with thoughts of his own, who had dared fall in love, exists no more.

Many people will say 1984 or something close to it is where we’re headed. They don’t like that direction, but feel powerless to change it. They feel powerless because they’ve listened to government mouthpieces. They’re told by politicians and their friends that everything’s really okay. Nothing wrong with a $20,000,000,000,000 debt. Or a federal tax haul of $3,248,723,000,000 (2015). Life is expensive. We’ve got enemies everywhere, welfare needs everywhere. This is how modern civilization works — you work, government takes. But you’re in on the deal, too.

Something’s missing. It’s missing from people’s thoughts. As it turns out it’s staring us in the face.

In Human Action Mises provided a comprehensive treatment of why civilization flourishes only when liberty flourishes in every area of life. He wrote an unapologetic defense of laissez-faire capitalism, otherwise known as the free market economy.

Unhampered markets stand between us and 1984.

In a letter to a reader in 1944, Orwell wrote: “I believe very deeply, as I explained in my book The Lion and the Unicorn, in the English people and in their capacity to centralise their economy without destroying freedom in doing so.”

Like interventionists generally, Orwell had a flawed understanding of economics. Earlier in his career Mises demolished the arguments of those recommending state control of the economy. Socialist states establish a means of distributing consumption goods, since all productive goods are state-owned. A certain amount is allotted to each person, usually in the form of coupons for a definite quantity of specified goods. People can directly exchange these coupons with others, as a form of barter, if they please. Indirect exchange will develop and lead to a universal medium of exchange — money.

But unlike money in a market economy, socialist money can only be exchanged for consumption goods. Since production goods cannot be exchanged for money, there is no way to price them. There is no way of knowing whether some proposed project would cover expenses, whether it would be a waste of resources or not. As Mises concludes,
we have the spectacle of a socialist economic order floundering in the ocean of possible and conceivable economic combinations without the compass of economic calculation. . . .

We cannot act economically if we are not in a position to understand economizing.

Under socialism, freedom is the freedom accorded a slave to obey or not.As Mises writes in Human Action, “it means the unrestricted centralization and unification of the conduct of all affairs in the hands of one authority.”

In a tribute to Mises and Human Action delivered at the Mises Institute on this day in 1999, Lew Rockwell pointed out that at the time of publication 50 years earlier, it was widely believed FDR had saved the world from the Nazis and the Depression by entering World War II. Given enough power, the state could do anything.


Ruling the land was a regime characterized by regimentation in intellectual, social, and political life. Human Action appeared in this setting not as polite suggestion that the world take another look at the merits of free enterprise. No, it was a seamless and uncompromising statement of theoretical purity that was completely at odds with the prevailing view.


If humanity has a future it will because people change their thinking and learn why freedom and free markets are indivisible, that any form of coercion is our enemy, especially when it pours forth from a monopoly institution. The works of Ludwig von Mises, especially Human Action, will be indispensable for a civilized society.

Turning Our Goals Into Commitments

One of our great vulnerabilities is that our intentions tend to be mood dependent. When we've just lost money and are in a remorseful state of mind, we vow to correct our errors and stick to our best practices. Then, the remorse gives way to curiosity and excitement and we forget our resolution. We allow our new moods to create different intentions--and different action patterns. True discipline means acting in a consistent manner regardless of mind state. That requires commitment. If we are truly committed to losing weight and getting in shape, we get to the gym no matter what time of day it is or what the weather is like. When we are committed to self-improvement, we don't rest on our laurels when things are going well. As Mike Bellafiore recently pointed out, we use positive performance the same way we use negative performance: as a source of learning and development.

Commitment is something we do, not something we have. The religious person starts each day in prayer; the basketball team meets each day for practice and conditioning; the world-class trader searches for opportunities and re-searches sources of new opportunities. These are routines sustained by a sense of urgency and importance. They are not mood-dependent because the sense of urgency transcends the moods of the moment. I might not feel like going to the gym and eating a healthy meal, but if I know the health of my heart depends on those actions after I've just had a heart attack, my feeling state of the moment becomes irrelevant.

Traders focus on setting goals to further their development, but goals by themselves lack power unless they are backed by urgency and are fueled by commitment. If I deeply love my wife and am filled with gratitude for the many things she has brought to my life, I can be in a funk and yet still want to do things for her and with her. If I urgently desire to win the next game, I'll shrug off my tiredness and push myself and my teammates in practice to take us to the next level. Show me your daily routine, and I'll show you your commitments. If it's in your heart, it will be in your calendar; if it's in your calendar, it will become an intrinsic part of you. Our activities express our character and shape it.
