I'm with you on the SPY & TLT trades. I don't know enough about Japan to have a strong opinion.
A nice way to play SPY (IMHO) is in the options market. Volatility is so low that buying puts (and/or shorting the stock + owning an out of the money call) is a cheap way to play the downside. We're in the 8th year of this bull market...trees don't grow to the sky.

EDIT: I should mention I recently shorted XLI (as well as my existing shorts in SPY, IWM, and EWU). Here's what that chart looked like when I snagged it on Thursday. Depending on how one draws that trendline, it's already broken. I'm really more interested to see $67 break on it... As a hedge, i also purchased $69-strike December calls, so if the stock rises past $69, i'm effectively stopped out of the trade

Thanks for the post.....this is how I currently see the pair - and it isn't looking good at the moment....
