SMMA(n) = EMA(2*n-1)
// EMA(5) periods = 2/alpha - 1; alpha = 2/(periods+1)
Disliked{quote} It's a relict from the 70s/80s when computer power to calculate an EMA was rare. Not used anymore. SMMA(n) = EMA(2*n-1) You don't need a long timeseries of values as my fore poster hints at to calculate an EMA. Every EMA can be expressed as a filter and may be calculated easily by // EMA(5) periods = 2/alpha - 1; alpha = 2/(periods+1) Here alpha is the weight of the current bar, the weight of the previous bar is "1-alpha". Bottom line and in simple terms: An SMMA is just an EMA of a different period. Example: SMMA(10) is identical to EMA(21)....Ignored
