Hello

Does anyone have any experience trading through Virtual Private servers?
I checked vpsland.com and I have no idea of what Windows VPS hosting plans to choose.
It is possible to manual trade your account running a Metatrader application on the VPS?

VPS works like a remote pc, so yes, you could manual / automatic trade your MetaTrader account using VPS. Just pick any Windows 2003 VPS with unmanaged control (it's about 35$ monthly on other VPS hosting service). Hope this help
I started a thread for this a few days ago, it died. There has been some posts here regarding this. I have even seen people posting with sucessful implementations of MT4 on Linux with WINE. Opens more hosting options. One option posted by Stockwet, is VPSland.com.

I would love to have an ongoing thread for this. I have not tested MT4 on Server 2003. I think it would work.

Hope more posts are forthcoming.

I've been using MT4 at VPSland for the last few weeks. I even ran multiple instances of MT4 to test out Firebird. Everything worked great. There were a couple times where my server rebooted - I'm not sure why. But, I've placed MT4 in my startup folder and that seemed to do the trick. I don't remember which plan I have, but, it's one of the cheaper ones. Even with 4 instances of MT4 running, I didn't even come close to my bandwidth or memory allocation.

Are you using VPSLand Server 2003 package as is to run MT4? I would love to try it for MT4 and other stuff, but would like some confirmation before shelling out the $.

I'm using the value plan. Righ now, they have a 1/2 off special. Just sign up for a month and see if it works out ($15 for the first month.)

Can you tell me how to put the EA into the MT4 platform? I try to apply the EA or Indicators etc by downloading from email attachment or from the forum site, but seem the downloading can't work. Any ways to make the MT4 plat form works with EA? Thanks in adveance.

Hi Trigger,

If you're using an .mq4 file, then, it needs to be compiled first. I think there are some posts, even in the Firebird thread, that describe how to use EA's in MetaTrader. Do a search and you should find the info you're looking for.

Stockwet, before I do a search and study more to make it work in VPS, i would like to thank you first for the prompt reply and guidance. One more question, once you have your MT works in VPS, what else to do to make it run all the time in the VPS server?

Well, I would suggest that you also include MT4 in your Windows "Startup" folder. That way, if your VPS server inadvertently goes down, MT4 will automatically startup and run again. I'd tweak your Expert Advisor options also to ensure that your experts are enabled in the event of a restart. I don't know the precise settings, so I can't guide you through it. I little fiddling with it should do the trick, though.

I tried vpsland on their windows machine and the MT4 would get terminated randomly. Their support was not helpful in resolving the issues. I might try it again with vmware under linux (what I am doing at home) but I doubt it. I have cable connection at home that maybe goes out once a year and a linux box that is tough as nails. I am using the publisher function to post live statements which are timestamped. A simple quick glance at that webpage tells me that EA is alive and well.

If you go with VPS, spend some time and learn about windows services. Service is a code that will restart any software you program incase of a shutdown. FireDaemon will help you do that, if you cannot install the "service" yourself.

Why would you want to run MT4 on a VPS ?!? Speaking as someone who has owned servers (including VPS's) for years, you can virtually guarantee that the server will be hacked into sooner rather than later and what do you think the hacker's going to do when he sees MT4 running with full access to your FX account ?

The risks far, far outweigh any perceived advantage of having MT4 running on a fast server IMHO.

I tried Vpsland for a month. My three MT4 applications worked fine when the vps was working. The vps working was the problem. My MT account was off several times a week. Sometimes it took several hours for them to work the problem out. I put the links for the MT4 platforms in the startup folder but it did not help much. When they were having one of their node problems all you could do was wait. Using your home computer with a healthy UPS and a good cable connection is far more reliable.

So would this take care of the Privacy issue? VDS - or a Dedicated Server ? They have a 100% uptime Guarantee! I am just curious what I would need to Guarantee that my acct. does not get raided? ... myriadnetwork.com
It is virtually impossible to 100% ensure that your server cannot get hacked. Dedicated or VPS makes no difference ....

I don't think this is necessarily correct, and in fact it may be the other way around. Let me explain:

My company offers, among other things, virtual desktops designed exclusively for traders. We host many....and only once has a trader's desktop become infected with something.

But...becuase it's a manged network, we saw the trouble right away and were able to help the subscriber return to a clean virtual desktop.

The infection actually came in from his careless web surfing habits. Had this been his personal desktop, there is no way he would have known of the infection.....this is the bigger risk.

I think traders are actually much better off in a virtual desktop/vps than a regular computer. Great connectivity, firewalls, intrusion systems, pro-active monitoring...and the ability to logon to your 'desktop' from anywhere...

First of all, my apologies for being computer challenged.
I have been seeking a solution to the following problem:
I can access OANDA (live acct) from work but their charting is well... lacking.
I don't have admin priviledges at work so I can't download anything.
I downloaded MT4 on my home computer but it runs on a blistering 28.8 telephone connection.
I want to be able to access and utilize the MT4 charting/platform to send me signals to trade using my OANDA acct while at work or home.

Does a virtual server allow me to do this?
