Hey everyone, I have a tech question. I am a computer tech by trade and have seen some posts here regarding using MT4 on a remote server. I get some down time on my home PC and with my internet connection. I have not had a chance to test this so I am asking.
I would like to know your set up. I was wondering also if any one has chosen a server location outside their home country for any reason (Sarbanes-Oxley or taxes/banking etc.).
I would like to know if MT4 runs on Windows server 2003 or if you need a virtual workstation.
There are several virtual server companies that are inexpensive, but reliable, that I am looking at.

Yes definitely! It's work without any problem on Windows Server 2003, i'm actually using MT4 on a VPS (virtual private server) with 3 different MT4 instance
Thanks for the info, I did not want to build a server just to find out. I have enough work. I will be looking into the VPS after I go live.

just so people know, it is not important how many instances of MT4 are running so much as what indicators or experts are being run. Some are extreme resource hogs. Most are just fine though.
hello! why are guys running MT4 on a VPS? what's the advantage of doing that? please shed some light!

Because I'm mostly using EA to trade automaticly so that I have the need that mt4 instances are 24/7 full time running without the worry of power failure or internet connection issue at home or something else

wow! that sounds really cool!! no more worrying about power failure or connection issues? can it really be done? I've been running three instances of MT4 on one of my desktops, and I have to keep it running 24 hrs a day, five days a week. it would be really great if all could be moved to a virtual environment on the internet. do you mind giving some instruction here on how to do it? I'm sure it'll be useful and appreciated by more than a few people here in the forum.

Firstly you have to find a good vps provider with a good rent price, I had found one really nice for me but it's in Italy based and I don't know if they works with foreign countries. Actually for my provider i'm paying 50 euro/month with a full licensed Windows 2003 server platform and 256 Mb ram, this is enough to handle more than 5 different mt4 session. I can acces the server through Remote Desktop Connection.
Anyway I think if you google you can find some affordable vps provider in your country

but my case is a bit more complicated. I run a couple of EAs on MT4, the EAs don't do real trades, their job is to monitor the markets for trade opportunities, and when they find one, they dial my mobile phone through Skype on my computer to inform me of it. I then use my handheld to place the real trades.

now I wonder if it's possible to run other applications such as Skype on this VPS? have you done it already? if so, do they have their full functionalities? please share with us a bit more of your knowledge.

Yes of course you can do whatever you want on that server, since it's like a normal server. Maybe i wasn't clear about that, you will connect to a window (or linux) server and you will see exactly the same desktop with the same thing as you install it on a normal pc.
The difference between VPS and a normal server is that you don't get the whole physical server assigned to you but it will assigned to you an instance of windows (or linux) platform (most of time handled by WMWare software) so that the physical server is shared with a number of instances from different users. This is why it's called 'Virtual Private Server'
In my VPS I installed also a Ventrilo and Teamspeak server instance and works really fine, you can also use a VPS as game server if you wish or to publish a site or whatever you need
Well I don't know how you could interface EA with Skype but I guess that if you can do that on a normal pc you can do that on a Virtual Private Server

Ok you will not access the server from mt4 mobile , but you will access it from a pc with windows (xp,2003) by remote desktop connection program.
Normally i can connect from my home or workoffice or from whatever pc that has a windows with Remote desktop connection program, i only insert the IP server address and password then i can control it from anywhere
Maybe you could find some vps provider that let you try for 1 week the vps so that you can play a little to see if it fits your need
