Currency Pairs - Same Currency, Different Direction?

I have one question that has been burning inside of me ever since I looked into currency trading.

Can two different currency pairs featuring a common currency move in opposite direction of each other? For instance, can the NZD/USD go down while the NZD/JPY goes up?

It seems to me that currency pair movements are linked in many different fashions, but it also seems logical that a currency could gain in value over one and lose value over another.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The simple answer, Yes, NU can go down while NJ goes up.

I'll give a simplified example so it might be easier to see why.

First, you're dealing with 3 currencies with these 2 pairs. NZD, USD, JPY

Example #1:
NZD goes up 100 pts.
USD goes up 100 pts.
JPY goes up 100 pts.
NU & NJ will both be unchanged

Example #2:
NZD goes up 100 pts.
USD goes up 200 pts.
JPY goes up 50 pts.
NU will go down (NZD weaker than USD) while NJ will go up (NZD stronger than JPY).

Not only it can but when it does it's time to have a look on the cross without this currency. If N/U goes down and N/J goes up it means that NZD is weaker than USD and JPY is weaker than NZD. Therefore JPY is much weaker than USD => U/J trends strongly up.
No greed. No fear. Just maths.

There correlated pairs, such as GBP / USD and EUR / USD, or AUD / USD or NZD / USD. These pairs often have the same orientation. But, it can be seen that the fundamental news on the NZD can not affect the AUD / USD. That is, they correlate by USD. If the news will be released on the dollar, they will affect all currencies related to USD.
