I am a long time Forex trader and to be frank I never paid attention to S&P500 until few weeks ago. My broker finally make it available!

I wonder if someone here with experience in this symbol could enlight me on 2 important things:

- Which time(s) are the best to watch/trade S&P500 for a day trader ?
- Which news events have an impact on the S&P500 ?

Any other usefull infos would be welcome!

Thank you for your help to a newbie

I have buddies who trade stocks and ETFs.
They usually trade when the US market opens because of the volatility.

Hi FerruFx,

I'm a long time Fx trader myself and added futures indicies this year.

In terms of the S&P500, anything that has a significant impact on USD affects it. Interest rates and anything related as well as the NFP.

Each stock index moves during the country's session - that would mean the US session for SP500, the australian/asian session for the ASX.

Thank you Lester.

So would you think that looking at the FF news calendar would be enough or other "special" news source would be needed ?

You're most welcome. I only use the FF news calendar. Full disclosure though, in my own trading I am primarily technical. I sometimes trade with a fundamental bias but always look for technical confirmation in a top down approach.

Therefore, I am well aware of all the "red news" events on the FF calendar and the Bloomberg headlines, but apart from that do not use news to primarily trade.

I don't subscribe to any special news source or any paid service.

Hey guys
Now I don't work with futures, but checking them everyday
economical news have the biggest influence. also worldwide like ebola, for example. If you see something new about ebola, new evidences and so on - S&P will be falling down
S&P is also connected with NQ and DJ. Like when IMB published their financial statements, NQ fell down and S&P little bit too.
I look trough all news in the morning. And after that - charts, and trying to connect and to make my prediction.
Good luck
PS my friend once told me that S&P chart after 2008 is like a Mona Lisa for trader

The e-mini ES is worth $50 / point, a tick being 0.25 = $12.50, trades almost 24 hours, but SP pit is open 9:30 ET - 4:15 pm, most action right after news at 8:30 am ET. Biggest news is of course FED, but also NFP. Many brokers offer day trade margins of $400-500, and you can rent Ninja Trader for $60 / month. You can get free real time data from AMP.
www dot ampfutures dot com / ninjatrader_cqg dot php (also see margin list)
I've tried to trade the ES500 CFD on MT4, but ... well, what can I say. It's still MT4 and all the ...
I use short term tick charts, range bars, and NT is good at building them.
Not getting paid for any of these recommendations.

Best time to trade ES (S&P 500) is 9:30-11:30 AM est. Can be pretty volatile though from 9:30-9:45. Good time for S/D-S/R traders.
After that, next best is 2:00-4:00 PM est.
Time from 12:00-2:00 est. is considered "dead-zone" when most big traders go for lunch break.

Hi, FerruFx!

S&P 500 is a complex Index.
It tends to react when high impact news are released, but it is also "Technical Responsive"; patterns doesn't tend to fail.

S&P500 is hard to Trade during the day. The lower TF I recommend is H4.
It has way too much volatility... specially on American Session open.

The Spread is wide; It's a "big boys" game... too expensive to afford mistakes, even with micro lots.

Tell me how you're going with that

Kind regards,
MarketFox.-
Trade, don't bet.

I read somewhere a trader saying he does the majority of his trading at the open and the close. These are the best times to interact with non-HFT participants.
He goes on to say that when he trades between 11 to 2 he trades a lot pays lots of commission but doesn't really make any money.

Hope this helps.
