Is Metatrader a standalone program or is it "attached" to a broker so that if you want to use it you have to go thru their brokerage??

It is a trading platform that different brokers purchase from its developer then "customize" to their brokerage. It is not a stand-alone program.

Sorry to disagree, but it can be used as a stand-alone application. Just download the MT4 client from MetaQuotes website and install it using the demo datafeed.

Will it interface with brokers such as oanda and fxcm. I guess what I'm really asking is if I create a program to trade my system will it automatically enter and exit for me (while im at work) thru my current accounts?

You cannot have FXCM data feed on MT4 platform, the only way automatic trading can be at this time is thru a bridge program with a macro to buy, sell & etc but the data feeds will not be the same.

What other brokers are using MT4 as their platform?
Could you please give a list and maybe suggest which brokers is good?
However, I really don't know what makes a broker good.

Just so you know, Oanda now offers their data API's if you want to integrate trading into a third party platform such as MT 4 or another custom trading platform. You can find more info on their site.

LOL no! I found it on a different forum some time ago, don't even remember where, and it was saved on my hard-disk.

I just found this tidbit on the Oanda API page:

Pricing

OANDA will charge a license fee of USD $600 for the Library, after which the customer is entitled to two free months of use. Monthly fees of USD $600 will commence following this two month period, discounted by USD $50 for each USD $1M in trading volume generated on the account. Note that a monthly volume of USD $12M would entitle the customer to free API use.


Ouchy if you're not moving $1M+! I would love to experiment with MT, but the proxy at work doesn't play friendly with it.

This is a bit off subject but ive installed an instance of MT4 from S&C forex to use strictly for backtesting purposes. Ive downloaded some history files from Alpari to achieve 90% modeling quality. Ive been doing some backtests and have noticed that my computer is now taking an excesively long time to open up my S&C MT4 trading platform 5 to 10 minutes sometimes. Does MT4 save backtest info? Or what might be causing this bogging down of my computer. I hope i dont have to keep installing and deleting MT4 everytime it starts to bog down. I know this is way off the subject but I didnt think I should open a new thread for this one question. Ive noticed that the tester folder is about 1.9 gigs in it. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

hi guys,

i m having problem reinstalling MT4 after download. When it tries to install the liveupdate.exe, it says, cant install file! any idea how to solve it ?
