How to open MT4 without loading previously opened charts?

Hi all,

I have a problem. I had a bunch of charts open, then Metrader 4 locked up maybe because too many charts were open so they were using too much memory, so the only way to close MT4 down was through the Windows Task Manager. Unfortunately, whenever I try to reopen MT4, the same charts I had open when MT4 locked up, tried to load causing MT4 to lockup again. So my question is this. How to open MT4 without loading the previously opened charts, that is, the charts that were open before MT4 was last closed? Is there a file I can delete to achieve this?

I would try & delete the profile folder that is causing the charts to load up.

Go to your MT4 profiles folder, open it, then delete the profile that is causing this lock up. Then restart MT4.

You can always re-assemble a new profile by opening New charts & loading your template(s) back again.

No.
The profile only "tells" the Mt4, which charts it should open.

Don't delete the profile rather just delete the file lastprofile.ini or even better just open lastprofile.ini in notepad, delete the profile listed there and type in the one you want.

Note that MT4 should be shut down when you do this. Now open MT4 and all should be ok.

Yes, this is the best way to do it.

Dear global3,

here is what i do when i need to disregard previously open charts on new MT4 start-up.

1) I close MT4
2) Browse to "MT4-folderprofilesdefault"

Example folder for my IBFX MT4:
Crogram FilesInterbank FX Trader 4profilesdefault

3) Delete all files. The ones with the .chr extension is the files that instruct MT4 to load the charts on start-up

Note that this is effective if you were using "default" profile, that is what "default" folder name stands for.
If you were using some other profile, you need to delete the .chr files inside that folder as well.
You can find out which profile you were using in the "MT4-folderprofileslastprofile.ini" file.

After all, if you are afraid to loose important info, you can just rename the folder to some other temporary name.

4) Start your MT4 again and you should have no charts open on start-up

Hope this helps.

The previous posts are obsolete. Deleting the charts in C:\Program Files (x86)\BrokerName - MetaTrader\profiles\Default does not work.

Newer versions of Metatrader have a Data Folder buried deep in c:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal, like so:

C:\Users\david\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\3212703ED955F10C7534BE8497B221F4\profiles\default

Close Metatrader. Navigate to your MetaQuotes Data Folder.

If you have more than one Metatrader installed check the Config file in the Data Folder to identify which broker. After verifying that delete all the chart01.chr, chart02.chr, chart03.chr files, etc, and the order.wnd file in the profiles/default folder.

Start Metatrader, problem solved. No charts should be open.

Cracked indicators found online can be expired which causes Metatrader to hang. You might need to delete any cracked indicators you installed also.

Under Tools, Options, Charts it is best to set Max Bars in History to 20,000 and Max Bars in Chart to 5,000.

These are the things I have discovered.
