Carrot and stick approach. I always saw the stick as being used to dangle the carrot just outside the reach of the person, not as possible punishment. Hmm... Is that how you see it?

I see the promise of the reward as the motivation for the person to keep putting effort and resources behind the pursuit. This is why I think traders endure the "pain" of going after the reward: failing and getting up again. The reward is just something they really want.
