does a chart have to be highlighted for the EA to perform?

last night I used the trailing stop EA to trail the market while i slept. When I woke however, the trailing stops were not updated and some of the pairs were hit for a full loss. Does the window with the EA have to be open for the EA to work? I am clueless and I really need some help with this.

No that's not necessary. Please post all facts. Did the EA open the orders? Does it have a trailing stop option? How about if the MT4 lost connection? If it did, it would've deactivated experts-advisors if MT4 is on default settings.

hi guys, thanks for the replies. here goes

1. EAs were turned on
2. I set the EAs to allow live trading
3. There was a smiley face in the upper right corner
4. The client was on when I awoke and was not updating my stops.

I opened the orders manually and then placed a trailing stop EA to trail the price for me. It appears that it did not do as it was supposed to. I am using the trailingstop.mq4 ea. I have turned off the profit trade option because I wanted a hard trail, not just to trail it when I was in profit.

What entries were there in the experts log and the journal log? Did the logs show any errors? Did the EA change any stops in the log?

Did you set it up so you could attach the EA to one chart and control all open positions or was the EA attached to each chart with the alternative options? It may not work right if you use the EA on more than one chart with the global option set to control all positions. If the EA you are using is the one I think.

Is this the EA by Steve Wilson from TSD or the one from Kimiv.ru on TSD or none of the above?

What is the advantage of using the EA instead of the built in trailing stop feature, a large number of open trades? I don't understand what you wanted the EA to do on the losing trades. If a trade goes against you right from the start wouldn't the stop loss stay at it's original position?

hi nvwine, the EA that I am using is the one by steve wilson. You can use it to control all open positions but I did not want that as I had different positions open with different stop losses. The advantage that I wanted to use was to have a hard trailing stop, ie. the stop would trail right from the beginning the distance I put in as the stop loss, rather than the mt4 way of having it trail AFTER it becomes positive by the value I place in there. If the trade goes against you, neither the mt4 stop loss or the steve wilson stop loss would protect you from that.

I do not know how to check the logs. Can you please let me know how to check the logs?

There are tabs for experts and journal at the bottom of the terminal window. If you click the experts tab you will see the entries in the log with the newest at the top. Since the window is small and limits the number of lines it is much easier to right click in the window and select open. You will see log files for different dates. You can view the files with Notepad or any simple viewer. The files show the newest entry at the bottom. Scroll down through the files and look for where the EA was installed and then look for any actions or errors. Some times if your not used to what should be there restart MT4 and restart the expert then immediately look at the log and you will get the idea of what should be there. Do the same thing for the journal tab.

I just downloaded the EA, re-started MT4 and installed it on an open losing trade with no SL. It set a SL and started trailing. I opened the two log files and pasted the relevant parts below. I don't have the expert.wav file in the correct directory so the sound does not work but the rest of the EA seems to work after a 15 min test.

One more suggestion. Start your testing by using the expert on only one chart. See if it works alright there. Then add it to a second chart and see if both trailing stops work properly. An EA like this one may have trouble tracking multiple orders.
