QuoteDislikedNIKKEI versus EUR/JPY
The correlation developments of the first 4 periods (24-months, 12 months, 6 months and 3 months) are similar to those of the developments of Nikkei-EUR/USD. Thus, the negative 24-month correlation was due to the contrasting directions between the Nikkei and the EUR/JPY during that period, which were highlighted by Nikkei's overall lead.
The ONLY NOTABLE DIFFERENCE between the Nikkei-EUR/JPY correlation and the Nikkei-EUR/USD correlation is the 01-month period. The negative value to the 01-month correlation in the Nikkei-EUR/JPY grouping is clearly explained by the gradual recovery in the Euro during the one-month period ending Nov 30 and the simultaneous drop in the Nikkei over the same period. The Euro had risen 1.7% against the yen due to intermittent ECB interventions that were effective in warding off speculators who were shorting the Euro. Meanwhile, the Nikkei fell 8.5% in November, hitting 14-month lows due to continuous foreign capital outflows from Japanese stocks, attributed to recurring news of downgrades in economic growth, mounting bankruptcies and continuously conflictive data.
