EMA'S & 4HR Time Frame....

If I'm working off of a 4 hr time frame what would be the best EMA's to use, would a 6EMA & 13EMA be sufficient or should I be working with different parmeters because of the 4 hr time frame.

Any help, would be much appreciated.

Well it depends.

What kind of information do you exactly want to gather off the MAs themselves? what will you use them for?
When they cross will be a possible entry or exit for the system I am using.

I have been partially using a system called The VanessaFX System. It is a four hour chart system and she uses

6 EMA
13 SMA
MACD
Parabolic SAR

and it also uses a 120 SMA and 300 SMA as support and resistance levels.

I found the 6 and 13 work very well together.

i like using fiboNo.'s for xMA periods.

as a general rule when working with ema's you can calculate the period needed with the following simple sum.

Period = (cycle / 2) + 1

where cycle is the number of bars between peaks or valleys so.. On the hourly the 24 hourly cycle is 13 i.e 24 / 2 + 1

where as a 24 hour cycle on the 4 hr is 6 / 2 + 1 = 4

both these values will roughly Equate to the same thing on the different timeframes.

one thing to note is that the calculation of ema's becomes less important(and sma's would do) at small values such as 4,5 or 6 etc.

in summary on a 4hr chart 6 and 13 ema's are roughly representative of 1(and a bit) and 4 day cycles on the 4hr charts.
These calculations are useful for converting ema's from one TF to another..

As wtb says it depends on what your after..
