whats going on with this ranging?

why is it seem that most pair are now in the middle of something not really making a move in either direction . what could casue this ? does this mean it could make a break in either direction..?

how many of you traders do this full time or part time and who plans on doing this full time

This usually happens around the holidays.
Don't sleep on this ranging market, there is usually a huge push of price action just before xmas, then the professional traders take the rest of the year off.

whether a market is ranging or trending is purely based on what t/f you're looking at.

there are many things that can cause consolidations or tight ranges at certain price levels/areas. uncertainty, waiting for news releases, time of year (as Jhig mentioned), parity, multi-year high/low...etc.

range bound price movement often results in price "breaking out" to either side of the range. several ways to explain this -- what makes sense to me is that price ranging creates psychological boundaries. places where bulls and bears are 50/50. all the offers or bids need to be filled with additional order flow in one direction to "break" the market out of the range. once either bulls/bears get a break out herd mentality kicks in.
