There is no simple disengagement path, given the scope of economic and legal entanglements. This isn’t a “trade” we can simply walk away from. But it is also one that, if allowed to continue in its current form, could lead to a loss of personal freedom for Western civilization. It really is that much of an existential question. Doing nothing isn’t an especially good option because, like it or not, ... (full story)

"Over the last 20–30 years, we have equipped the Chinese with almost everything they need to match us, technologically and otherwise. Hundreds of billions of Western dollars have been spent developing China and its state-owned businesses."

US total fdi to China from 1990 to 2019 is around $250 billions. Chinese tourists spend about $150 billions a year. US companies subsidiaries sold $700+ billions in Chinese market. US FDi is a peanut compared to what China is. Also, it not US but Singapore's Temasek holdings and other overseas Chinese that help China in their initial years testing capitalism.

Americans are delusional in their speculation about China. China grew not because of US desire to make China rich. Rather US was thinking they were exploiting cheap Chinese labours. China grew because of globalized free trade and China was best equiped to succeed. Also, its not just China but almost every developing country that grew. Which means China will continue to grow whether US wants it nor it!
