In the week ending August 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 209,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 220,000 to 221,000. The 4-week moving average was 214,500, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 213,750 to 214,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending August 10, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. US weekly jobless claims fall more than expected
The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week, suggesting the labor market was holding firm despite a manufacturing slowdown and concerns the economy is on a path toward recession. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 209,000 for the week ended August 17, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Data for the prior week was revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported. The decline was sharper than expected.
