  • What next after PM May's third Brexit defeat

    From think.ing.com

After a rollercoaster couple of days, UK prime minister Theresa May has failed to convince lawmakers to back her Brexit deal. She did, however, succeed in narrowing the scale of her loss, with a number of Conservative switchers taking the margin of defeat to 58 from 149 a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, it’s hard to escape the conclusion that as things stand, the prime minister’s deal in its current form looks finished - although this might not be the last we hear of it. For now, though, attention is shifting to Monday, where backbench lawmakers will continue the process of ‘indicative votes’ to try and settle on ... (full story)

Why don't the Brits put together a bipartisan approach to brexit and send 2 or more politicians from all parties to negotiate with the Euros.
After all, this decision was made by the people and so it is up to the politicians to make it work!!

The EU said they won’t renegotiate - they are treating it as an administrative/legal exercise, not a political one, which makes sense from their side.

Anyway, the word is that she will try AGAIN next week. Having lost by 230, 149 and now just 58 votes, she apparently thinks it might be fourth time lucky 🙈

"What next after PM May's third Brexit defeat?" The answer is a fourth defeat.

Ignored
You are the FIRST commenter Ive seen on FF, smart enough and with sufficient overview to identify that fundamental reason on why the UK has proved so allegedly ineffective in its Withdrawal negotiations, and was always fated to do so when pitched against the EU. That reality is why when Mrs May first declared her version of Brexit with its Red Lines.. she made the "shape" of the resulting Withdrawal Agreement entirely PREDICTABLE. And why the UK "Threat" to leave without a "Deal" if they didnt get exceptional/special treatment was idiotic.

Sadly and again, predictably ,when the negotiated Withdrawal Agreement was been returned to UK Parliament in January for ratification..it was rejected.
Because it was NOTHING LIKE what UK People were promised in their Referendum Decision, OR the UK Parliament s naive expectations in its enthusiasm to do the "Will of the People".
The UKs political chaos is because they are still struggling to understanding that reality and the stark choices it leaves them with.
There will be no EU reopening of the WA. And if the UK at this stage, choose to crashout there may even be a sigh of relief from quite a few EU27 members.
One thing is sure.. since now UK has no Legal right for extension, any further grace requested or given by EU27 will have a high price.

Note: The EU and its operation as a supranational body is highly administratively and legally structured. There is no other stable way for it to work. (Codified structures of law and regulation have underpinned european democracy and politics for 200 years since Napoleon). EU political flexibility and expediency is limited by this constraint. And why the ideas nurtured by the UK Brexit lobby (EU will blink at last minute/German Car Makers will not let NoDeal Happen etc..) are ridiculous.
