  • Seven minutes of chaos: The 'flash-crash' that rocked currency markets

    From smh.com.au

Traders are still seeking to piece together what happened just before 9:30 a.m. in Sydney, when orders came to sell Australia's dollar and Turkey's lira against the yen. While some pointed to risk aversion triggered by Apple cutting its sales outlook, others said Japanese retail investors were behind the trades. Whatever the cause, the moves were exacerbated by algorithmic programs and thin liquidity with Japan on holiday. The results: the yen jumped almost 8 per cent against the Australian dollar to its strongest since 2009, and surged 10 per cent versus the Turkish lira. The Japanese currency rose at least 1 per ... That's possible effect of huge speculation.

Any Huge Dog (CB, bank, private investor like Buffet pulls out some of Apple, or dirty corrupted government financial secret service, lol...) can take advantage on low liquidity periods of time.

Fat finger on low liquidity environment, go for it, baby!
...but doncha ever use those fkn "mental" stops, you little retail chaps !!

And hope and pray your real stop gets honored by your beloved broker...and not after a 500 pip "gap"..

Right
...solution to that: set opposite Stop pending orders like grid at every 10 pips
...the beloved one gotta "honor" one of them at some point
...don't forget to set alarm as well, before you get filled a tone of opposite pendings and market reverses

Champ, listen, your mother and I have been talking and we think it's time you put yourself out there into the workforce. Everyone has to pull their own weight around here and if you're going to continue living under our roof then we feel you should be contributing. Plus, a job builds character and toughness and teaches the value of a hard, honest day's work.

Now I know you're disappointed your forex leveraged trading didn't work out. But you have to understand, that platform currency or whatever has no real value - nothing is backing it! At least now you can earn cold hard cash, backed by the full faith of the United States government. When I was your age I had to pay my own way through college. I saved up and bought my own car, my own apartment and then I met your mother and we moved out to the suburbs.

Now, this is all you have to do. Go up to the counter, ask for the manager, look him straight in the eye and give him a firm handshake and say "Sir, I would like to work here. I am ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and done well." It's that easy. Afterward, I'll treat you to lunch, maybe get you some of those tendies you're always raving on about.

How's that sound, champ? Go get 'em!

Taking care and setting stop-loss orders not enough? Possibly holidays of moving majors have to put higher up on checklist, because this smells more like currency manipulation than accident.
trading is war - life is simple

Everyone in the world knows end of Dec beginning of Jan is low liquidity. EVERYONE. Do you really think bankers don't get vacations for Christmas and New Years too? That's a false assumption. They do keep the desks manned, but with a skeleton crew....like most governments do. That's not to TRADE, its to manage RISK.

As already mentioned, it only takes one rather large trade to trigger momentum algos, nobody to take the other side, viola....a normal move gets exacerbated 3-5x. I can't say it enough....don't be the dummy trading end of year low liquidity environment.

SNB was high liquidity "black swan", so was 2008 crash (high liquidity, but buyers dried up), this was a low liquidity large trade exacerbated by algos and probably large stops.

Whatever the case...the end result is always the same DO NOT TRADE LOW LIQUIDITY (at least, not with your normal trade size).

RIP to those of you getting margined on the second day of 2019.

Well, it's not a "normal move", it's called "flash crash" for a reason, it took less than 2 minutes to crash.

Those kinds of moves aren't done in the "retail market", any of the brokers that you have access will not fill you in there, those moves are caused in black pools of futures markets or inside the interbank exchange, so or you are a bank/big fish or you going to get wiped like a hot knife in butter.

Nothing unusual about this drop, look at the eur/usd 4hr chart, the signs were all there, unfortunately I don't now how to post a chart here so I'm not able to take you through the moves, right up to the 15m chart and point where should have entered. I were still sleeping when this all happened!!

yea- you think retail has any effect at all ever?
retail don't make the real market, not that it matters
it's not normal but it is real
I've seen moves start in these times many times and go on for some time
