  • Trump pushes 25 percent auto tariff as top advisers scramble to stop him

    From washingtonpost.com

Several of President Trump’s senior economic advisers believe he plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on close to $200 billion in foreign-made automobiles later this year, three people briefed on discussions said. Trump wants to move forward despite numerous warnings from GOP leaders and business executives who have argued that such a move could damage the economy and lead to political mutiny. But Trump has become increasingly defiant in his trade strategy, following his own instincts and intuition and eschewing advice from his inner circle. He has told advisers and Republicans to simply trust his business acumen, a ... (full story)

Not a bad idea. I am sure genius president will do it. Ban on all import then all countries will ban US export. Self-sufficient just like North Korea Juche.

Dollar will no longer needed in international trades and don't have to worry about currency manipulations.

Genius.

Every time I see a weak politician asking to stop Trade talks or the use of Tariffs to counter unfair Tariffs, I wonder, what can they be thinking? Are we just going to continue and let our farmers and country get ripped off? Lost $817 Billion on Trade last year. No weakness!

I like what he is doing. The main message is no tariffs anywhere. allow the worlds markets to compete free of interventions like these. If a country tariffs more competitive imports it creates an artificial environment, which is protectionism. Chuck it all out and let the best market win. The way to make this message clear is to so penalise the system of trade tariffs so as to abolish it. The World Trade Organisation was set up so as to direct trade into certain areas that benefited some countries. It's a manipulation and should go. World trade should not be manipulated in this way and it should be free of restriction and manipulation. Really a trade tariff is similar to a sanction. It's a weapon. Donald should go all out and kill it.

Here is the question. Who gets that 25%. Where does that money go? Yes the final purchaser has it tacked on to his price to reimburse the car manufacturer.. so the purchasers money is going through the purchaser ultimately to whom? Who really is going to get the 50 BILLION?

It's a tax on consumer and the government gets it. Tariff = Import tax.

Could be done if they stop exporting and just make products for American market.

Although they will probably need a lot of immigration to supply workforce.

Won't be much variety of products just one choice.

Don't have to worry about quality customers have no alternatives.

Of course many things will be quite expensive, have to pay workers a decent wage, so they can afford the products.

The company that imports the goods from another country pays tariffs and duties when the products arrive.

All costs of importing, shipping and handling, tariffs and duties etc. are added into the price the final purchaser pays. Along with markups from each company it passes through.

The government collects the tariffs and duties, what they spend it on or where it goes nobody knows.

Just another hidden consumer tax.

Not well versed in American politics but I thought that in a democratic country the president cannot impose tariffs or otherwise interfere with trade legislation unless he has had such measures scrutinized and voted upon by others who represent the checks and balances in the exercise of presidential authority ?
Therefore, some here may be premature in their judgement of Trumps tariff threats?

Listen, it’s a tax that will be given away in subsidies or corporate welfare. Totally unnecessary and it will send us off a cliff.
