Harley Davidson is distinctively an American brand. Their entire marketing platform and brand is built upon it. Their website offers forums providing Americans an opportunity to connect and gather together annually. They are distinctively American gatherings. It is a slap in the face to have such a company dump American jobs and install plants overseas in this case. Tariffs or no, this is a very bad move for Harley based upon their existing marketing scheme. Perhaps they really have found another market niche in Europe which is most likely the case and the added tariffs only encourage a move they were already considering.

We will see everything from bad economies to birth defects blamed on the tariffs until kingdom come. ha
Harley Davidson is a company and me thinks that it is not owned by the government. The managers have a duty to their shareholders and their employees and to try to make the business profitable.

It always has been survival of those who can produce at a competitive price. Moving production to another location is at times a viable proposition, it may be cheaper labour, cheaper premises, tax advantages/concessions. It might be better for Harley Davidson to establish a subsidary and survive rather than sticking to a single shrinking market and go bankrupt. It is no different that in the UK with Brexit - financial firms are moving to the mainland.

The cat is out of the bag (other countries have caught up with knowledge) and there is no way that the cat can be put back in. Eat your cake and having it too is mutually exclusive.

Long term this does not bode well for the USD and the US stock market.

This. Excellent point. Reminds me of the Cadillac market. They are having difficulty finding younger buyers.

This brings to mind the matter with which I pondered after posting. Harley isn't a bit deal to our economy. I'm thinking, perhaps, the real concern is that Americans might not have as much money overall. Ergo, a European market might be more lucrative.

in essence, the sign points to American's wallets more than failing businesses as a result of the tariffs (or any other politically expedient talking point).

Note: America doesn't really have very many items that are distinctively "American" since we are a melting pot. That's the reason Harley is such an issue, but it is also indicative of its irrelevancy in this matter, imo.
Harley has been manufacturing and sourcing components for its bikes overseas for decades. They own overseas mfr'ing plants in India, Brazil, Thailand, and Australia. They source components from many other foreign suppliers besides. News flash: this is how it is with most of manufacturing. If you saw some commercials with American flags and sappy scenes of Iowa corn fields and came away from that thinking, yah Brand X is a Murican company, well then you are a victim of advertising and your own gullibilty.

Foreign ownership of US companies is nothing new and today whole sectors of enterprise in the US are majority foreign-owned.

The rest of the world has made their economy on the back of our worker. they want to continue to sell here at a very low tax and yet they want us to pay 50 to 100 percent higher to have access to their markets. what trump is doing is letting the other countries set their own tariffs. Whatever they charge us we charg us we charge them . Nothing could be more fair.

As to the HD issue. leave them alone and they will die on their own. They build bikes that few riders under 50 want. they have not owned the market in a long time. If they try to move to the Eur to build they will not be able the meet the imisson or construction rules. They claim to build a high quality bike but I ride a Gold built in the USA and it is twice the bike of any HD product I have owned. Goldwings are about in price range of HD (around 30K ) But IMHO they out power.handle and ride Any HD. there is a reason younger rider don't buy HD now. The joke in the Honda and BMW crowd is " the harley riders love having us ride with them so they have somebody to go for parts when they break down.

IN TRUTH i AM NOT BASHING HARLEY. THEY BUILD A GREAT BIKE BUT THEY ARE WAY BEHIND SOME OF THE OTHER BRANDS IN POWER AND VALUE AND THE SALES SHOW THAT. NO BIKES LOOK OR SOUND AS GOOD AS A HD PRODUCT.

HOWEVER...They are out of touch with the concept of what it would it would cost to build a harley in Europe.

Trump is on the right path we will win the trade war because we have little to lose. They ship thousands of freight containers of stuff here every day and ship so few back they litter the harbor lots by the thousands and we build homes and storage buildings out of them. why don't we send them back full of American goods because the other countries don't to compete with us so they keep us out.

We have to make the playing field even...

Yea, the people who suffered the most are the Chinese citizens. For decades, China has imposed super high tariff on all other countries. The Chinese Communist get richer (and buy personal luxury boats, private airplanes and mansions overseas and built aircraft carriers and bombers and bribe influence overseas) while the Chinese citizens get poorer (school teachers are not paid wages for months and veteran soldiers' benefit are promised but forfeited).

Why is ok for apple to made offshore ?
Apples builds builds phones in slave labor conditions for a few bucks apiece ships them here and sells them to the retail arm for a few bucks a piece so the tariff is on that small price then marks them up to a grand.

You want a "level playing field?" That means wages would need to be leveled across all continents. That's what will need to happen if you want to see iPhones manufactured in the USA.

The protectionist "philosophy" promotes an emotional argument: "the world is taking advantage of us!" Cry me a freakin river and tell that to the guy making $4/day and pooping in the same ditch that his kid's drinking water comes from. Americans don't know how good they've got it. Read the article it unfortuinatly is 1 1/2 years old. Trump never put his holdings in a blind trust, his sons are running the company. Their working on new deals all the time. Everything you stated is false.

Many American companies sell much more of their products outside of the U.S. Why would they not set up factories in other countries reducing shipping costs and being closer to suppliers. That is the reason for tariffs to make it more profitable for companies to set up factories in the market they are trying to reach.

There are many factories in the U.S. from foreign companies. Every company want their markets to be employed, the more people employed and making a decent living the more customers they have. Tariffs will make companies build in America what the American market needs not more. They will export from the countries with the cheapest labor and the best free trade deals.
The list below could be a mile long. It's hard to believe so many people do not understand what globalization is.
