Depressing that this POTUS is so ignorant. A Harley bike is made of parts that are imported from other manufacturing facilities in many other countries. Harley owns some of those plants where they make components and contracts with other foreign suppliers for other components. Components are imported into the US and the bikes get final assembly here. These supply chains take a long time to develop and protectionist policies that disrupt those relationships are just bad for business. Any protectionist tariffs imposed on imported parts and materials are taxes that are passed along to domestic consumers. That's right, tariffs are taxes and they end up making a Harley more expensive and less competitive in a global marketplace. That is why Harley will have to shift more production overseas. It's no accident that almost all Trump (America First! lol) family products sold in the USA are produced overseas, also.

Donald Trump is now at war with Harley-Davidson. Priceless.

There will be more assembly plants in US that rely on global supply chain will have no choice but to move out somewhere else to save cost and business.

Surely there is no real difference between Harley-Davidson investing in a foreign country and a real estate company building a hotel or office building in a foreign country. The Trump organation lists investments in over 10 overseas locations. I dont understand any of this?

No, I don't think things are just happening by chance, although of course there are elements of chance in the transition of history for one man, one Nation, and even one planet.

People look for easy, "black and white" answers for very complex questions, though. What PB (and BS) say above puts in a nutshell the premise that free trade in an era of globalization has been disastrous for American workers. I think you can make that case, to some extent, but I also think you can zoom out and see that globalization has been an overall positive force that has lifted the standards of living of people on all continents. PB harks back to some glory days of capitalism as a model that we should try to retrieve. Well, things have also changed since Teddy Roosevelt's days: we have much more developed international markets and companies that owe their success to business enterprises across all borders. We have instantaneous communications and banking etc, factors that facilitate international trade, that Roosevelt could not even have imagined.

People have created a Boogie Man called "Globalism" and believe that is a real thing. It's not. There is ever-increasing globalization and that is not going to change unless we have some kind of apocalypse. We are not going back to the days of Roosevelt. Jobs making shitty plastic goods and underwear are not coming back to the USA en masse, unless the wages for that work arrive at parity here and elsewhere (like Vietnam and Honduras.)

People are clamoring for "free" and "fair" trade. Is it "fair" that the USA has 4% of Earth's population and consumes 25% of Earth's oil production? Is it "fair" that still 1/4 of Earth's population doesn't even have access to clean water? The median wage s for Chinese workers have quadrupled in the last ten years; that of USA workers been grinding along pretty flat for decades. Is that fair? How you answer these kinds of questions determines how you might be labeled: "progressive" vs. "conservative", "liberal vs. Fascist", and so on. But these questions are being settled - usually you can just "follow the money" to get the best clues as to how and why.

Unless a vechile is manufactured in a western country i am not interested. i have owned dozens of cars, mainly volkswagens, and the ones manufactured outside of europe have consistently been of a much, much lower quality

As a motorcyclist (last 35yrs) HD is basically sourced almost all their parts from overseas and only assembled in US.Its basically 90% foreign made product however when you take consideration how much HD charges for their bikes and how much Japanese charge for their superior quality cruisers then it becomes obvious American consumers have been overpaying HD for decades for inferior product.
