Well, I mean, if you're trading what is supposed to be an untraceable asset in a traceable manner, a thing designed to evade government mandate, including the rule of any kind of law... It's only a matter of time some regular profit-craving crims will come for you -- it's like a criminal equivalent of fiduciary duty!

As for digital currencies overall -- they've existed long before bitcoin! In a non-decentralized, regulated manner, of course. Webmoney was established in what, 1998? So BoE putting out another one of those "Paypal Wallets" is rather pointless. That's not saying they'd never want to regulate the cryptos, just not in this manner.

Just like having your money in a safe at home or in a bank. The principle of cryptocurrencies is that you do not have to go through an intermediary to perform a transaction, both parties are anonymous. Just the same when you transact with cash, both parties are anonymous and no one knows that the transaction has taken place e.g. a bank, a credit card company, a credit reference agency or a government, which is what the powers in control fear.

Time for a crypto that is fully transparent. This is one of the benefits of blockchain technology. Cash will soon be obsolete. All transactions will be on blockchain as they should be. Theft and unauthorised transfer will be readily traceable. This will make it harder for businesses and individuals to engage in illegal or fraudulent activity. The central bank will have access to all transaction activity and transfer of funds.

The only difference is that the bank has to guarantee your money in case of robbery but no one will guarantee the bitcoins or cash you keep in your mattress...

Google fractional reserve. Any money you have in the bank has been lent out 10-100x over, it's already gone. All you're seeing is an accounting entry. If at any time all account holders at a bank decided to withdraw, it would collapse instantly.

Of course that's also not including other scenarios when banks taking bets with your money and losing it all (eg Euro banks with Greek bonds, US banks in financial crisis).

Ironically, cryptocurrencies are supposed to offer transparency among its advantages but in practice it is the opposite. Otherwise, you will not have virus writer and online criminals asking to be paid in cryptocurrencies for ransom. It is precisely that cryptocurrencies is non-centralized, not accountable to any central authority that it is hard for it to get past the goal post of jurisdictions guarded by the central banks of the world.

If you are talking about the blockchain technology, then yes it has tremendous potential and opportunities. That is worth a premium price. But if you talking about cryptocurrencies, imo, no way. You need to make a distinction between blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. They are not the same. Cryptocurrencies use blockchain technology. Blockchain technology can be used in many other implements (e.g. central banks issued or regulated and approved implements) besides cryptocurrencies.

If you mixed blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies together and see them as one and the same, you will fail to see the risk involved in cryptocurrencies. One is the technology, the other is a manifestation of the working of that technology. The same technology may see another manifestation in some other implements. And when that happens, the implements that is/are acceptable by most if not all (including financial system regulators) will see to the demise of cryptocurrencies.

Meh its not like the traditional banking system don't lose hundreds of billions of dollars to fraud or hacks every year. Most of the time banks just keep it secret to protect their reputation. Even the US Fed itself lost a cool 100mil in the well publicized hack a few years back ((https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/cyber-heist-federal/).

The point of cryptocurrencies is that it's irreversible and you can transact without worrying about interference from banks or hostile governments. It's about freedom to do what you want with your money without some 3rd party butting in.
