USDJPY fell on the news. Then it went up on higher US CPI of 0.45.

What are traders supposed to do?

what you do is NOT trade right before big news items. Instead trade what you see as other react to what the news reports and interprets. I made my pips on two trades after the initial reaction. Moves were quite clear and easy to take then.

Gold moves were as a result of USD news. JPY was the same. even Bitcoin continued loss as a result right to the lower channel of an H1 chart. All have settled now now that USD has settled down.

All quite clear on the charts as it happened.

The "craziness" and "gyrations" in the UsdJpy today is often what happens at important turning points in the markets. In today's case an important top was put in place...

I think you can trade before big news and do well. It is a matter of shutting down the losing trades faster than the winning trades. I haven't figured out the details but I am going to give it a try. Basically it depends on the market moving past the first gap if the news is significant.

If you are wrong then your stop loss should get you out at the end of the initial gap, if you are right then you have to decide to leave it open or close it. The main problems is most of the time significant news just makes strange, unpredictable volatility which goes back and forth, in which case I don't really know what to do.

Traders who borrowed yen at Japan's rock-bottom borrowing costs to invest in higher-yielding currencies would quickly unwind their positions, sending the currency higher in a knee-jerk reaction
Foreign investors, who hold about30 percent of Japan's stock market -- some 175 trillion yen ($1.6 trillion) as of the end of March -- would pull funds out, spooked by fears of damage to the nation from an attack and the hit to corporate earnings
Japanese themselves would take money out of the country, for the same reasons as foreign stockholders
At the same time, Japanese insurers and manufacturers would bring overseas funds back home to pay for domestic damage
Treasury yields fall as investors seek safer assets, causing the dollar to weaken and boosting the yen
Expectations for U.S. defense spending improve prospects for American growth, strengthening the dollar and driving down the yen
