  • Fed: This is what it sounds like when doves cry

    From olivierdesbarres.co.uk

The Federal Reserve is unlikely to hike its policy rate from 0.25-0.50% at its 16th March 2016 meeting and may have little choice but to revise down its expectations to around 3 hikes for 2016 in its accompanying projections. In the 16th December “dot-chart”, the median expectation among the 10 voting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members and 7 non-voting members was for four hikes this year (the weighted average was for a slightly less hawkish 91bp of hikes). This would imply a hike every other meeting, most likely faster than the “gradual” approach Chairperson Yellen and other members have ... (full story)

True. The reason for guidance stressing data dependence, is that the voting members won't make decisions without looking at data. It may seem elementary, but equities traders have gotten so spoiled by the free money that they freak out like spoiled children at the possibility that they might actually lose if they make poor trading decisions. Ten minutes listening to equities guru's should tell you what you need to know about that mentality. There is no (more) free ride.

By definition no one ever knows with 100% certainty what decision a central bank will take (one could even argue that monetary council members themselves may not be 100% sure what decision they will take until the day of the policy meeting). We can but only try to make an educated guess based on sound analysis.
