JULY KEY POINTS TREND ESTIMATES (MONTHLY CHANGE) Employment increased to 11,797,300. Unemployment increased to 772,300. Unemployment rate remained steady at 6.1%. Participation rate remained steady at 64.9%. Monthly hours worked in all jobs decreased 0.4 million hours to 1,634.0 million hours. SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES (MONTHLY CHANGE) Employment increased 38,500 to 11,810,700. Full-time employment increased 12,400 to 8,170,400 and part-time employment increased 26,100 to 3,640,300. The unemployment rate only reflects those that are actively looking for a job NOT everyone without a job.

That means that in the latest report a portion of those that had NOT been actively looking for work have now decided that they will begin to actively look for work. That number out numbered the people who found work (over 10k) and caused the unemployment rate to increase.

It's good news for AU, no doubt about it.

Unemployment jumps from 6 to 6.3pc, despite 38,500 extra jobs

The reason why unemployment jumped despite much better-than-expected jobs growth is that the participation rate soared 0.3 percentage points to 65.1 per cent.

This rate measures the proportion of people either in work or looking for it compared to the population aged 15 years and over.

This means that more people were looking for work, soaking up all the new jobs and then some.

"We did see the unemployment rate rise but given job growth has also been quite strong it's still a positive," she told Reuters.

This is the highest level of unemployed since November 1994.
Annette Beacher, TD Securities"The jump in the unemployment rate was because the participation rate jumped, and that means more workers are looking for jobs.

"This data supports the view that the labour market is on solid footing and, if anything, it's probably lessening the chance of another rate cut."

Not necessarily, these aren't raw figures, they are seasonally adjusted and "tuned" a number of ways. That's why decisions shouldn't be based on them. As others have mentioned , the participation rate comments are key here. Interpret them as you wish.

Australia reports it's unemployment "seasonally adjusted". This is a dated system that doesn't really have much relevance nowadays. Four times in the last twelve months they have looked back at the figure ( especially a couple that were real anomalies) and re-adjusted them. Todays figures indicate a larger number of people actively looking for work even though there was actually an increase in jobs created. Swings and roundabouts. Best not to sweat too much on the numbers and let the market do the talking...wait for the confirmation.

Should add.

It's only a sample size of 20,000 workers or non workers from a workforce of approx 11 million.

All employment data from around the world is taken from a very small sample size.

Just focus on market reaction and price levels from the result.

Seems to me that's the case because the market seems to be in a stand still, probably thinking. bad for straddlers. I'm caught in the middle of the park. Hope the size of the employment change have greater impact so it can move back up.

market makers stop hunted at the top , evident with the pin drop, price is sitting on a cluster of EMA's ... if it passes thru these they will push to targets around .7308 1.414 off the last low. News to me is all total BS always has been , just used to screw traders.

They closed the 1.272 like i mentioned earlier, if this level holds which i dont think it will then long, .7298 for a 1.618 looks better after that a 1.902 .7285 around there.

It would seem the overall hours worked in Australia have decreased and more people shared those hours, looks like the RBA will have something to think about especially if the rate edges towards 7%.
