US Unemployment Benefits Preview
The U.S. Labor Department reports on the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits last week. The report will be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time Thursday. MODEST INCREASE: Economists forecast that weekly applications rose 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 315,000, according to a survey by FactSet. Even with that expected increase, the claims would be close to the four-week average of 310,250. That less volatile measure is at its lowest level since June 2007. STRONGER JOBS MARKET: Applications are a proxy for layoffs, so the running average suggests employers are letting go of fewer workers. When ... (full story)
