Ukraine doesn't have gas resources. It only allows Gazprom's lines to run through the country. Previous attempts by Russia to penalize Ukraine for using gas and not paying for it made EU to look to Canada and other countries for NG resources, thus reducing its dependence on Russia.

As for the nuclear bases, will be interesting to see how especially the world reacts.
