  • Will Kuroda do a Bernanke?

    The performance of the JPY (strengthening) and Nikkei (falling notably) over the last few days suggests a market that is expecting to be disappointed by tonight's BoJ Governor Kuroda's speech. However, as Citi's Steve Englander notes, given the recent Bernanke-Carey-Draghi actions, we suspect there will be some temptation for Kuroda to speak out whether ex cathedra as BoJ Governor or with his personal view Bernanke style so as to get the NKY-JPY train back on track. Japan Yen strengthening means eurjpy& yen pairs down,when ever Nikkei down yen become strong !

Maybe Kuroda's actions tonight will give a glimpse at what will happen after Merkel's election in the fall. Anotherwords, once all the major politicians get elected will they stop the easy money policies and let the stock market & economy tank.

The reason we see JPY rise in times when investors are seeking safety....is because Japan's public debt is primarily held domestically and therefore represents little risk in "default" as opposed to the U.S.

When money flows seek "risk aversion" JPY will always benefit - no matter how much printing BOJ does.

Nikkei has now "swung high" on weekly charts suggesting further to fall - much further - and in turn ......JPY rises.

Bottom line is - we are going to see further rate cuts out of Australia very soon, as well the slowing in China looks to be worse than (I at least) originally anticipated.

I'm short AUD vs USD as well JPY.
