  • Japan's Abe has chance to show true colors after big election win

    From reuters.com

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition scored a decisive victory in an election on Sunday -- so big that there are suspicions he will lose interest in difficult economic reforms and pursue his nationalist agenda instead. The victory in the vote for parliament's upper house gives Abe a stronger mandate for his prescription for reviving the stagnant economy. Ironically perhaps, it could also give lawmakers in his own party, some of whom have little appetite for painful but vital reforms, more clout to resist change. Public broadcaster NHK said early on Monday that Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and ... (full story)

"Media projections showed the LDP and New Komeito would win more than 70 of the 121 seats up for grabs in the 242-seat upper house. With the coalition's uncontested 59 seats, that hands it a hefty majority, solidifying Abe's grip on power and raising the chances of a long-term Japanese leader for the first time since the reformist Koizumi's rare five-year term ended in 2006.

No election for either house of parliament need be held until 2016.

Exit polls showed, however, that the LDP fell short of winning an upper house majority in its own right for the first time since 1989, although it could put in a better performance than in 2001, when the party was led by the popular Koizumi."

result is final and official yet, or based on exit polls?

"We've argued that our economic policies aren't mistaken, and the public gave us their support. People now want to feel the benefits. The economy indeed is improving "

Then, ABE will continously with the current moneytary policies .... All YEN pairs will have a gap up tomorrow.. Let's wait, JPY will continously become more weaker

Yes jpy will start weakening again. This is round 2. Maybe it will try to break previous high. If the fed will start taper qe at september then it may even hit 110 in coming months.

The story is somewhat misleading IMHO. The focus IMHO is whether the LDP still has to rule in a governing coalition. So the Reuters story should have answered whether or not the LDP won an outright majority. In which case USDJPY could spike. Anything short of that I wouldn't be going out "betting the farm" just yet. One should take into account the amount of LDP seats won vs its coalition partners. If there is a decrease then that wouldn't look good.

From NBC: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc won a decisive election victory on Sunday, cementing his grip on power but raising the possibility he could lose interest in difficult economic reform and shift focus to his nationalist agenda instead.

So YEN may not go up

1. Political certainty and stability - good for JPY
2. Free money printing - very bad for JPY - but Mr. Market already knows what Japan is doing with its money printing machines.
3. New policy statements - mix baggage (this where the problem is)

Last week, JPY was the worst performance against its peers, so Mr. Market might already priced in some of the downdraft.

I will be cautious SHORTING JPY this week, it may end up being the BULLS ambush or trap for the BEARS!
There is always a price for promises you don't keep!

Abe's Liberal Democratic Party won 65 seats, the highest number since the Upper House election in 2001, when the current electoral system began. The LDP's partner, New Komeito, secured 11 seats.

Combined with their 59 uncontested seats, the coalition has 135, 6 seats more than the 129 needed for a comfortable majority. A comfortable majority allows the coalition to control all the 17 standing committees of the chamber.

It's expected that the coalition would win. But LDP didn't win the majority on its own.

Forex always goes the oppposite from data, buy the rumours and sell the facts. Trade the opposite, traders been going long prior to election now the news is out they will start to short. Thats my opinion.

What did I tell you? The magic number for the LDP to win was 72. And no USDJPY didn't gap up. My platform stays open 1 hr after NY exits and USDJPY rallied to about 100.62 on Friday. Anything short of 72 means that LDP does not have outright majority and has to rule in a coalition. So to me initial reaction should be down on JPY pairs - especially USDJPY. And that is exactly what happened. By the way there are stops below 70 lvl on USDJPY.

Funny, I could swear he planned to strengthen the economy by weakening the yen to support exports.
