  • BOE 'poised’ for more QE to avert triple dip

    The Bank of England could expand its money-printing programme as early as Thursday if monthly business surveys raise the threat of a “triple dip”, say analysts. Policymakers are expected to pay close attention to the latest round of monthly purchasing managers’ indices (PMIs), which track companies’ orders, outputs and headcount. The surveys will offer a snapshot of economic activity in March, pointing to whether it has been strong enough to dodge another slump. It's outrageous if the mpc creates more QE in order to help a govt avoid the embarrassment of falling into a triple dip recession.

So I would assume GBP lower on QE. I triple dip recession is crazy to think about. However, I cannot remember the last major data point that was possible.

I do know they have had earlier QE attempts. I think these governments think the fact that they can issue QE is enough. I think what they actually do with the QE that makes the difference.

Tptb lost control in 2008 when zirp and rounds of QE plus bailouts took us into unchartered waters, tbh I'm a little bit freaked after the Cyprus message wrt where the inmates of the zoo may take us and what they're prepared to collapse in order to protect their gains and status.

The major concerns with QE was how to protect inter party banking relationships whilst preventing leakage in the form of inflation (hyper?) There was never any intention of Main Street benefitting only Wall St.

Bernanke and othe leading players such as the outgoing BoE guv obsessionaly believed that rising equities and other assets was the escape hatch. The brightest guys in the room (any room) and that was the best they could come up with...

Oh, no doubt. The "middle-class" was never intended to benefit from QE. Bernanke is a Keynasian, so we're led to believe that it will "trickle" down. While the the rich get richer, the struggling are stagnant.

What I wonder is instead of buying treasuries and MBSs, why can't the QE be directly infused into industries that provide growth. My life has not changed because Bernanke bought some treasuries. After three years of QE, trillions later, and the U.S. cannot show a consistent sign of recovery. The U.S. has one of the most aggressive QE programs and grow .5% last quarter. Exciting!

Good points well made. Many economists, such as Roubini when the 2008 event horizon dawned, were drowned out over their pleas to save Main Street ahead of Wall Street, unfortunately tptb saw it as a one off chance to trickle up wealth and ring fence a wall of assets. To date the muddled classes have been silent, J6P is very confused if he's still in a job, the mortgage rate is tolerable and he's putting aside a little each month. Many truly believe the worst of the crises is over. The shock with the Cypriot event is the message that nothing is off the table, middle class wealth will be destroyed and confiscated to preserve the wealth of the banco politico elite. And if our American cousins think its an EU issue they're blissfully ignorant and very much mistaken.

QE was/is never intended to help the economy in any real way, that is the reason for King giving it all to the banks. They in turn used it to buy treasuries forcing interest rates down. This has put us UK taxpayers on the hook for an extra 8 Billion of interest to date. If/when interest rates start to go up the city bankers are going to make huge profits with the taxpayers liable for all of the additional taxes to pay the interest. It seems that bankers cannot lose.
