Large banks and institutions have to pay out clients in real capital, usually at the end of each month. Depending on their particular payout (usually US Dollars) they try to buy back at the most favourable rate (to them NOT you or the client) These orders can sometimes be very large, and at certain times lead to bounces in the forex market.
I do agree that some people use them as an excuse when making bad decisions but they certainly do exist.
Very broad brush explanation but hope it helps.

Interesting to see that forex eur/usd is now traded to 6 decimal places(quote#32). that is more or less similar to the stock index that I scalp. when I traded forex a few years back on MT4, there were only 4 decimal places. One of the reasons that I rarely trade forex anymore is that I cannot see order (bid and ask) size and depth, which I can see to 9 lines on the platform that I now use. My broker can see far more market depth and can tell me that there are huge buy and sell orders miles away from the price action. that means nothing to me as those huge orders can be cancelled before one blinks an eye. under normal circumstances I can pull an order off the top line, but sometimes the price explodes and blows away all 9 lines. when I see the size of some orders, I would be happy to be an ant in the way of an elephant - even if he does put his foot down on me, I may well escape unharmed due to uneven surfaces. years ago a trader could see the brokers name next to the order, but not these days. marketmakers benefit from flat markets as they do not have to hedge off the risk. I see how the market makers control the range intraday with medium size orders either side of the range, sending in soldiers to to defend the "borderline", which I draw in as intraday support/resistance. Come particular explosive moments such as normal market open and close auctions, or major news, the big players take over and the marketmaker can no longer control the price.
