Following the initial reaction in the market in favor of the USD on account of Bernanke not offering any new stimulus, we saw a dramatic reversal, and whipsaw in the USD majors.That was a surprise. Another surprise was Bernanke comments on fiscal policy in which he cast some stones at Washington’s debt ceiling debate for slowing the economy, but then made a plea for some fiscal steps to help unemployment and the short term prospects for the US economy. He certainly has good reason to cry. The Fed is firing all its bullets at the roadblocks to growth and the politicians keep creating more stumbling blocks through their grandstanding and childish partisan games. It is definitely the politicians who have eroded consumer and business confidence in the US, not the Fed.

Okay Mima calm down. Nobody is accusing anyone of anything. AaronWard was simply pointing out the sentiment of some people in Canada who are wondering if the USA will ever target Canada should they feel the need to go to war again.

It is not so far fetched. Canada has an abundance of two of the most sought after natural resources in the world. Water and Oil. If the USA wants to get their hands on any of it and Canada says "No way", some hotshot tea party senators may just dream up an excuse to invade, just like they did with Iraq.

There is more than one way to skin a cat and those people you speak of have decided to try and skin it alive whilst hoping that the other cats won't notice and thereby keep coming.
I have absolutely no problem with austerity, debt limits and zero deficits. In fact it is great for the economic stability and creates confidence in itself. However, when politicians behave the way they do in such circumstances, especially with confidence so low, they do more harm than good. The Fed has a very difficult job to do and this kind of political grandstanding very quickly undoes any good that may be derived from the Fed's actions. That's not just my opinion but rather a hard fact that nobody can deny. I will not enter into the merits of the recent S&P downgrade of US credit rating but it is quite obvious and apparent that the reason for the downgrade was not the Fed but rather childish antics from both sides of the house in Washington.

Not really sure where you can read about this. But most Canadians have heard somebody talking about this possibility from time to time. And without question, both US and Canada has drawn up plans dealing with this possibility. And I have heard more than one American saying "f... Canada, we should just invade them." But only in jest.

I personally do not believe this will happen. But when you look at the US options, a land war with a neighboring country really makes much more sense than flying everybody overseas. Easier to take and cheaper to hold. So you have two options, Canada and Mexico. And Canada has a lot more to offer than Mexico.

The face value of words is by dictionary and defenition of the word, but a a skillful author can say something with his words, but it will communicate something that is , ironic , sarcastic or have double meaning, or say the opposite of what is written, A skill that AronWard have to perfection, especially when it is slanted towards the humorous side.

A statement like -"Lets invade Canada", that can be insulting, ignorant, stupid and maybe even a dangerous proposition.

Take the same statement...back off, and smile, and it becomes hillarious.

This is one of the more bizarre threads I've read in a while...

The consensus seems to be that:
1. War is somehow good for the economy
2. The Fed is doing a great job
3. The people who want the US to live within its means are automatically considered whackjobs and are destroying the economy
4. The mere suggestion that Canada may be the target of a US invasion gets a psychotic reaction (although the idea is a bit silly since Canada already belongs to the US, it is not outside the realm of possibility since Canadians could decide to try and secede).

Keep it coming, this is great stuff.

That the political grandstanding did more damage than the Fed is not a fact. That is your opinion. My opinion is that you are wrong. The Fed and Congress are both to blame, like the crack dealer and the addict, but it is not the last few hits (QE) alone that brought us to the point of overdose - it is years, even decades, of abuse that finally culminate in this mess.

Trichet's speech is a load of crap. He is trying to fool people around. The US is nothing like Europe. The two countries are very different and so is their banking system. He ither doesn't know what he is talking about or he is very eager to defend the EUR. As it seems he is trying to convince CBs and countries out there not to pull their funds out of there because if they do the EU will totally collapse and the whole dream of it. In fact it could create such a mess in Europe that the region would never ever get united, and in fact nations would just simply hate each other. Having read these posts for about the third time now, and still finding them a great source of laughter, I decided to writ a critic, against my better judgement, of everything I see that is wrong with many of the blogs I read here. Maybe a fool's post.

1. Reading Critically does not mean criticizing what other people have written, but rather to make an effort to understand the author's intention. I realize the lack of grammar and the abundance of misspelled words can make posts difficult to read, let alone to understand. When this happens, I usually avoid the post. If I believe I have something of VALUE to add to the blog, then I will writ my own post. I realize some of the bloggers are not well versed in English, and this is excusable. I personally have two dictionaries at my side to ensure I at the very least get the large words spelled correctly.

2. Writing Critically does not mean criticizing what others have written just because we don't share their OPINION. It means writing from an informed position. Seeking credible sources of information with which to correct others, and being able to site those sources is both constructive and respectful to the the other bloggers. It also builds a sense of integrity for the site and for the bloggers involved. Wikkipedia, You Tube, and other such sources are not credible sources of information, unless you are reporting on what you found through one of these sources. If you quote someone, you must quote their exact words, otherwise they become your words. You cannot assume another meaning from what someone else has written by misquoting that blogger.

It really sums up the direction this blog began to take. Unfortunately, the author left out the punctuation, so we're left with having to either put a question mark or an exclamation mark at the end of the post.

I personally try to edit each blog I writ. It is difficult to writ in this very small box and catch every little mistake. I have also edited after posting only to post again and lose half of what I wrote. If after this I don't like the post, I erase it.

Aaron Ward, you started a war between the U. S. and Canada. Maybe you should be deported to someplace like downtown Vancouver.

This was also my consensus of the statement. When you writ, you have to consider your audience. Becoming to abstract in the way you articulate a point of view is lost on the wrong audience. However, the statement in question could be nothing else but one jesting. To read anything else into it is ridicules. It's nice to know you think more highly of someone else's opinion other than your own, and considering many of your posts, I have doubts about your endorsements. :-)

I was wondering what took you so long. You seem to be the only piece missing from this blog. Its also nice to know you own a dictionary JR.

The Fed has done everything it can at this point. I concur with PipTrapper. The Washington D.C. politicians have ruined this country with their greed and cowardace yet they show no sign of letting up. The major media has done everything it can to obfuscate and withhold the truth concerning almost everything of any real consequence. Bernanke did exactly what the situation calls for. He spoke the truth.

Canada's military power is no where close to U.S', so it is no point to invade a defenseless country, it won't stimulate anything. But other target like North Korea with nuclear weapon, the stake is too high. So the way of war to our economic problem is not viable.

But I can't understand why China hasn't entered into the conversation. They're the only (major) country that can afford to invade anyone. The US can no longer be the Empire.

So perhaps China will invade Canada as a first step to taking over the Western Hemisphere.

Or, since world economy's are so interdependent nowadays maybe no one will do squat to anyone. Now THAT would be bizarre.

A good point. It's all about money and the Chinese have more than their share. Why waste it on useless wars over something they already have. I believe a lot of <b>immediate</b> damage was done by the political wrangling but maybe that will be a good thing. People will finally wake up and see that politicians have no interest in doing what's right. They have an interest in furthering their careers if they can find people gullible enough to follow them.

They (politicians) made themselves look foolish which was part of the reason for the downgrade. So stated by S&P in a round-about way.

Regardless, today's problems didn't suddenly appear one day. Consumers and government over-leveraged. Politicians and the Fed encouraged it. George W spent everyone's money on his dream and Obama doesn't know how to get it back.
