I think it has to breach that mid 160.500 or get closer to 161. Regardless jpy officials will just say this isn't reflecting the fundamentals but clearly it is. They're so disconnected and probably favor a weaker yen though they try to say markets should move in an orderly fashion. Well that rate differential and that JGB bond buying suppressing the yen is exactly why it keeps hitting this price region with ease.

boj is 10 days away, im not sure if mof/boj would be active pre-mpc. likely see usdjpy capped by the invisible hand, and vols collapse. more interesting will be post mpc as hawkish bias priced, no hike jpy weaknes further, and hard for them to really do much.

They put themselves in this corner though. It would be IMO pointless to do another intervention unless they're about to address the reason why.

They can't increase the rates the way they want because of their high levels of debt. You have a policy differential rate with most developed economies in comparison to yen. Without addressing the fundamentals all this "intervention" is just temporary. They've tried to verbally say they're open to raising the rates and what not. Let's see what they actually do.

yeah agree on your assessment of how they are constrained on moving depo rate. i.e. they should have normalized earlier, and more aggressively but that "constraint" is holding them back. i guess its now a question of whether if time for economy participants to adjust was what they were waiting for.
