  • US retail sales tumbled 0.8% in January, much more than expected

    Consumer spending fell sharply in January, presenting a potential early danger sign for the economy, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Advanced retail sales declined 0.8% for the month following a downwardly revised 0.4% gain in December, according to the Census Bureau. A decrease had been expected: Economists surveyed by Dow Jones were looking for a drop of 0.3%, in part to make up for seasonal distortions that probably boosted December’s number. The post-Christmas month showing lower consumer spending is a given. I don't think it should even have any significant impact; we all know this to be true going back decades. I don't think it really signifies anything about the economy other than the normal annual consumer cycle. Going into spring and summer consumer spending will start to increase again.

Regarding BOJ. It would be interesting if it would intervene around 152. This will be the third time it hit it with rising lower major bottoms. The BOJ's intervention can have only so much effect against the steady, strong tide of big interest differentials. They may intervene again, but the price would go back up again in a short time as it did previously. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some intervention, but if the price makes its way to 160, where there would be significant intervention coupled with this being around mid-year and US rates closer to likely being cut, the price could continue to fall around 3000-4000 pips.
