  • UK Government Looks at Measures to Lift EU Trade Barriers

    From bnnbloomberg.ca

Rishi Sunak is looking at ways to remove many of the UK’s trade barriers with the European Union, including a potential Swiss-style relationship that would risk angering many on the right wing of his Conservative Party, the Times reported. Switzerland has access to the bloc through a series of bilateral agreements but that deal requires a more liberal attitude to migration from the EU than the party’s hardcore Brexit faction would be prepared to accept, the newspaper reported Saturday. “Any approach requiring the UK to align with EU rules to get trade benefits, whether as part of a Swiss-style approach or any ... Interesting response.

""Undemocratic? Do tell us about that one? Last polls I looked at 56% finally realized Brexit was a mistake.
and 32% still hadnt joined the dots yet.

"" OMG.. is ""fake brexiteer Sunak" now in danger of a ERG Fatwa from Ayatollas J.Rees-Mog, and Steve Baker?

Investors businesses and ordinary people know UK NEEDS GROWTH. Even the Lettuce made it her central focus.
IMHO Chancellors Hunts Statement will not deliver that. No 10/11 the OBR and IFS all know it wont deliver that.
It has a simple remedy. Recover that growth from the -4% of self inflicted GDP loss and 15% trade squeeze created by BJs disastrous WA, TCA and NIP.

Sunak is more pragmatic and more in tune with a growing opinion that the mass of people were hoodwinked by the Brexit boys. "Immigration?" - the only problem is "illegal immigration" not lawful migration of workers necessary to the UK economy. Rees-Mogg etc still think the UK is a world empire player where bigger countries actually care or listen to every utterance from that little island. Politicians still blatently try to ignore or sideline that minus four percent in recent political or news programmes. How much better to be part of a big group of friends rather than stand on the sidelines dreaming of empire

Sunak.. the Prime Minister.. makes policy statement.
Then as you write.. we have an on air TV denial from the Government health secretary that this is government policy.

What kind of shitshow is UK in?
Cable might be interesting tomorrow. Or maybe in Fx, even insanity can be priced in.

Actually the Suntak statement is a complete delusion. There are no circumstances in which the EU will agree to a "Swiss" deal with the UK. The EU does not like the "Swiss" deal it has with the Swiss! The piece also has the smell of "German car makers" - businesses will demand it" delusion about it.

Europe, Japan and China are suffering the same problems as the UK. Its called an ageing population. Being in or out of the EU is an irrelevance from that perspective. Back to the article frictionless trade is great if it can be achieved, but it's not worth losing sovereignty over.
