IMHO...The repeated nuclear threat is a distraction.
Putins just come back from meetings with Xi and Modi.. both have told him they are unhappy/uncomfortable with his Ukraine War, and hinting at their boundaries to their otherwise quasi but sympathetic neutral positions. The Partial Mobilization is a reflection of military failure.(a subject in itself) and the very serious strategic political economic and intelligence misjudgements Putin has made in initiating the war and in its management to date.
It will be interesting to see where this "partial" mobilization ((300k men??) will be focused. Almost certainly away from Moscow, and St Petersburg where the destabilizing effects of returning soldiers tales are already undermining the Putin narrative.(AKA Afghanistan in 88/89)
Again IMHO, as to the economic war with the western alliance, and the impact of sanctions.. These continue to impact the economy cumulatively on multiple fronts, and in many ways not highlighted by media. The cracks will continue to be slow to become visible.. its how these things work..very slowly at first and then very fast. Modern economies are highly complex organic systems with many self-corrective features, and while populist media continually look for killer blows.. in reality their degradation is achieved by "1000 cuts" not by silver bullets.

Putin needs a way to save face should he end the war. Thus he may go all out to secure some Ukrainian territory and stop at that and claim his objectives have been met?
