  • Kuroda: Japan's Inflation Dynamics and the Role of Monetary Policy

From boj.or.jp Story is in PDF Format

It is a great privilege to be invited to speak at Columbia Business School today. Weinstein, the current director at the center, and Professor Ito Takatoshi, my longtime friend and good partner in economic debate. More than two years have passed since the COVID-19 outbreak in spring 2020. Despite the ... (full story)

Its Kuroda vs. Lagarde, as who will destroy the economy quicker.
Everyone can see the chart, but only a few can actually read it.

Because inflation is only going to happen if the demand for good is increased (people have more money to spend). Japan has kept salaries at the same level for last several decades, which caused deflation. Kuroda is trying to artificially cause inflation with devaluation of Yen, which IMO will help export but since Japan imports all raw materials, profits will flow somewhere else, and Japans economy will weaken.

The longer the "can't miss, can't lose" JPY carry trade goes on, the more grotesque the leverage in the trade will grow, and the more vicious the risk-off counter move will be when there is, oh, say, a major geopolitical surprise overnight/over the weekend.

Japan monetary policy stayed almost the same during pandemic. Their economy did not suffer such a hard hit as US and EU. Money in cicrculation was not raised so much to inflate JPY. The problem is that world banks are raising rates while Japan doesent have need for that action which will slower their economy. Higher rate, less money in supply, less money for buisnesses etc..so what is happening right now is that investors are taking money from JPY bonds and switching to USD or GOLD. Because of that YEN is losing its value and its causing inflation which will probably lead to rate spike.
