How will this affect the value of the yen? I'm sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but I've tried to find an answer online to no avail.

Yen to the bin. No way investors are favoring YEN over the Dollar. The differentials is too wide.
All investors are going to gold and USD now. BOJ does not care

Yen is still considered as safe heaven currency. The only reason for this huge weakening is the bank of Japan doesn't want to raise interest rates. If/when BOJ decides to follow higher rates trend ,we will see sharp demand for Yen again which will follow by huge strengthening of it. For now there is NO inflation with Yen so this is all scened to produce inflation. With higher inflation there will be reason to rise rates which will lead Investors to turn on to Yen

If this is all new to you, these sorts of comments are aimed at slowing down the drop in the yen. It has slumped dramatically in past weeks and months. Japanese officials want to slow its fall. And there is some concern on the negative impacts of the weak yen now. The verbal interventions like this are the first step toward actual intervention. There has been no sign that this is imminent as yet. JPY drop to a 20 year low against the dollar:
