Even on an island like New Zealand, this virus will find its targets till 90% of the population finally will have antibodies, either natural or through vaccination. Those without will get it once in their lifetime for sure and if you are against vaccination, you better get it young and healthy than above 65 or preconditions.

Lockdowns to prevent infections at every price are a stupid idea, especially at this point with all the knowledge gathered so far and with just 1 single case. You will reach the point where the economic and social costs of lockdowns far ourweigh the temporary benefits. In the end you just postponed the inevitable outcome for a few years but caused far more economic damage then necessary.

Lockdowns to ensure the health care system isn't overloaded make a lot of sense. If case numbers rise too fast, they have to be slowed down through hard, short lockdowns, rigorous testing and isolation.

Currently just at 20% fully vaccinated in NZ, which is low. Without pain, a significant part of the population will oppose the vaccination. To reach herd immunity this way is wishful thinking.

Switzerland is above 50% and soon will be at 55% vaccination rate. Moderna works, nevertheless about 25% are against taking a vaccine because they think they can handle this virus without problems if they get it. Probably about 20-25% of the population already had covid naturally. All I know personally recovered, even people above 90 years old without lasting symptoms. How big the "long covid thing" really is will be seen in a few years. The data is getting collected.

Most of those who do not want to take the vaccine will get it till the end of this year with the delta variant. So in 2022 herd immunity likely will be reached here in Switzerland. This doesn't mean there will be no covid cases anymore with new variants, but since the immune system has already dealt with this type of virus it should cope better and faster with future variants. Evolution works - life goes on.

At this point a mix between natural immunisation of none vulnerable groups (young age, healthy) combined with vaccination of all vulnerable groups is the best way to go. No need to force anybody to take a vaccine, but don't blame others when you get a serious covid infection. You had the choice.
