  • 45% of Croatia’s citizens want euro adopted, says National Bank

    From euractiv.com

In February this year, 45% of Croatian citizens supported the adoption of the euro, up from the 41% recorded last year, according to a survey conducted by the Croatian National Bank (HNB). By comparison, 19% oppose adopting the euro, while 26% were either against or in favour depending on other factors, the HNB reported. According to the survey, more citizens believe in the euro’s positive effect. Easier payment and business, as well as the fact that the euro as the common currency of the euro area would put Croatia on equal footing with other members of the Monetary Union, are among the advantages of adopting the ... Interesting headline...
Of course since a quarter of the folk dont have ANY view one way or the other.. (??)
Another way to look at it would be that 70% OF THOSE WITH A VIEW.. favor adopting the Euro.
(Oh and personally.. its totally immaterial to me... )

45% are idiots. https://tradingeconomics.com/croatia...nt-debt-to-gdp
End result Italy Government Debt to GDP | 1988-2020 Data | 2021-2023 Forecast | Historical (tradingeconomics.com)

Its not even just Italy take a look at any of the PIGS to see what will happen.

It is designed to feed the northern countries with migration of the best of their youth, this then reduces competition for Germany and France for their protected industries.

France and Germany subsidise the southern states to make sure they do not go under, but also to make sure they do not go anywhere.

If you keep your currency you can develop your industry to eventually threaten their dominance.

So why does this occur - well lets take fiat as an example. Technologically it is not at par with BMW, VW's but by keeping the lira it could be made cheaper through a competitive fx rate negating the comparative advantage.

When Italy joined the EURO it lost that mechanism weakening homeland industry, meaning skilled labour goes north.

This just ends up with Italy/Croatia being a tourism economy nothing more.

As a Croat, I believe Euro would bring more benefits than negatives as Croatia is a tourist country and that would make it easier for other Europeans to visit or invest in Croatia. Anyway, most of the prices are already calculated in both Euro and Kuna, especially vehicles and houses.

This principle is reasonably true of what happens in any aggregation of this nature. The strong get stronger and the weak weaker - this generalisation is subject to exceptions, of course, but like you say. It is a feature in international trade and fairly predictable flows of capital and labour which you correctly point out.

So, as IgorGG says, the tourist industry which is about 20% of Croatia GDP may benefit. What of the other 80%? The tourist slice of the pie gets bigger in relative terms - I'll take that as a given.

But the pie gets smaller and less diverse and comparative advantage (a poorly understood but very powerful concept, thankyou for reminding me) gets hammered.

Lets this way: NOTHING GONA CHANGE FOR A NORMAL PEOPLE. You will live in illusion (in the matrix). They will take all ur resourses - natural and human! Will give you "free traveling" and some import benefits.
They will handle the drug supply, money loundering. EU need lequidity for the euro. Will give you money to build and renovate, but 90% that money will go in their own firms.. in one word look at GB....
