Harcos, The problem is exactly what you wrote - "new refineries should have been built..."

Nowadays oil refineries are NIMBY projects (not in my back yard) that are nearly impossible to get approved - that's why the pipeline was going to be built. Now without a pipeline the tar will need to be transported via rail and that it much more riskier due to poor railroads that haven't been updated.

The Keystone pipeline was a win-win for both countries but now this marks the beginning of the end of fossle fuels and the end of many high paying jobs for non-college educated people.

Too bad. Im not against fighting climate change, but here in Canada we have a lot of social programs we could help fund with all the money made from the oil sand. Global warming is real, but the higher cost of living and difficulties facing the average Canadians is also real and we need new source of revenue if we want to pay for all the social program we want.

oh by the way, big oil in the US will be thrilled ! Its less competition for them. With less oil coming in, prices will be higher and remain higher, generating more profits for them while our Canadian oil stays in the ground.

Capelli I respectfully disagree, if Alberta didn't have King Ralph in the 90's shutting down schools and hospitals and bragging about paying off the debt like a Dad who pays off the mortgage but can't buy groceries then Keystone wouldn't matter. The stupidity of pumping an unrefined dirty crude out of the province for a fraction of the price of a bbl of oil just so Canada can turn around and by the finished products back at a higher cost floors me. All the oil patch has done for Alberta is make a handful of millionaires while it has made more foreign billionaires than any other industry in Canada. There should have been new refineries built years ago and Alberta should be selling only the finished product and would be the Warren Buffet of the provinces but that is all too late now. Keystone would not have benefitted Canada other than giving a handful of pipeliners a few years of employment so I say good riddance. Time to move into the future , the money is in different sources of energy. Look how many major investors are no longer in fossil fuel energy stocks. The signs are clear.
